“Oh? That’s a shame. You’ve only seen what I can do when it’s just you.” He released my head and stalked to the side. “You see… things get a whole lot more interesting when I have the one you love.”

I froze, watching his movement as he turned to Damien.No.

“Poor Damien.” Each cruel, calculated step of his boots echoed off the metal walls. “He put so much faith in your ability. What a fuckin’ fool.”

“Don’t you fucking touch him!”

Marcus whipped around, flipping his knife open, and he lifted my chin with the blade. My eye shifted to him, burning into his. “Ah, there it is. I like that fire in your eyes. I’ll love it even more when I extinguish it.”

Time was running out. I needed to keep Marcus away from Damien until he could recover, or until Barrett and the others could find us. That is, if they hadn’t been captured, or… I swallowed. “Why are you working with the darklings?”

His face soured, and he released my jaw. A sense of triumph came over me. He hadn’t expected me to know his secret. “I saw it in Cole’s mind.”

“You?” His blond brows narrowed.

He came around in front of me, lowering himself to my level. A puzzled expression painted his face, and he planted his hand on my shoulder. I gasped as he tilted my chair back, just keeping me from falling back onto the concrete. His eyes danced as he looked me over, muttering words under his breath. “Shit. You really are her.”

I frowned, confused.

“Oh, this is too good. You’re really Moira’s reincarnation? I didn’t believe it at first but… that’s why Melantha wants you. She wants to convert you.” A disturbing grin spread across his face. “After all these years, where the hell have you been?”

He released me, and I yelped as my chair fell forward onto its legs. He turned away, yelling out as if he spoke to someone, but there was no one else in the room, save us. “Eris, you dumb bitch! You knew all this time that I had Selene’s daughter! I’m not playing yourfuckinggames anymore! Show yourself!”

The names he spoke were unfamiliar to me. I assumed that Melantha was the name of the darkling leader, who I already knew wanted me. Who was Eris though?

He continued to curse the person as if they were listening, growing more crazed by the minute and my lungs sucked in panicked breaths. He was insane.

My eyes drifted to Damien who remained unconscious. I prayed that he would wake up soon, that he was ok. While I was too weak, surely he could break free of these bindings.

“Are you worried about him?” My body tensed as Marcus spoke, realizing he’d caught me watching Damien. He stalked over to Damien, grabbing a handful of Damien’s hair, lifting his head. He lifted his blade, swiping loose waves from Damien’s face, his hair matted with blood. I stopped breathing.

“Leave him alone!”

“He looks so peaceful, Cas.” He turned his gaze to me. “Would you like to wake him, or should I?”

Tears welled in my eyes as he held his knife to Damien’s throat. “Oh, how he’s suffered waiting for you to return. So many years spent searching for his lost mate.” Marcus’ brows raised as he tilted his head, watching my reactions. “I could end it. Put him out of his misery. Come on, Cas. It’d be kind to just end him now.”

I thrashed in my bindings. “Please! Please don’t!”

He groaned, shoulders slumping as he rolled his eyes. “Where’d that fire in your eyes go? It’s no fun if you just cave like that.”

I screamed as Marcus shoved Damien to the side. Still bound to the chair and unconscious, he hit the ground hard.

“Stop it!” I pleaded, struggling with the ties that held me in place. The plastic bit into my skin as I tried to pull my hands apart. Heat rose in my chest, and my eyes burned.

Burn him.

“What do you want with us?” I shouted, shoving down the fury that was boiling in me.

A crazed grin spread across his face. “To send a message.”

I stiffened.

His eyes darkened. “This is a revolution, little songbird. A declaration that we won’t be Selene’s pawns any longer; won’t bury any more of our kind for her mistakes.”

Her mistakes? My chest heaved as he grew closer, and my lips parted to speak. “It wasn’t her fault what happened to Viv—”

Marcus’ head jerked as the door opened, and one of his men rushed in toward him. He whispered something in Marcus’ ear, and Marcus cursed under his breath. “Watch them. Don’t let them out of your sight. I’ll be right back.” The guy nodded before Marcus passed him, stomping out the door and slamming it shut behind him.
