Immediately, I shook my head. “They need you, Wilder. They need your strength. The Darkness won’t be easy to defeat. And they won’t make it to safety without you protecting them.”

Because even though our people were finally going home, they were also walking into another war. A war that had pushed us out five hundred years ago.

“And I’ll be of no help without you there. Who will be there for me tomorrow morning, if not you?”

His words broke my heart, shredding whatever was left, but I knew I couldn’t falter in my stance. The prophecy foretold this. I couldn’t go, not without being the reason billions of innocent humans died.

“The others will be there. You don’t have to be alone anymore.”

And I knew my words were true. The others would be there for him, allowing him to be a part of their world. Being the ones there with a smile when he needed it.

“Go, Wilder. Please.”

I broke, my power finally ebbing and I knew that the Divines needed to make it through the portal quickly, before I couldn’t hold it open any longer.

Wilder turned towards the portal, glaring, before facing me again, pulling me close and pressing his mouth to mine. With each sweep of his tongue, I felt the longing he had been holding back. With each bite of his teeth, I felt his hatred at my choice. And with each caress of his lips, I felt the love I could have had for this man if only we had more time.

Pulling away, Wilder stormed towards the portal, one last sentence coming from him.

“I just got you princess, and I’ll do fucking everything to get you back.”

And then he stepped towards the others, the six people who had formed my family, stepping through the portal, leading the Divines home. And leaving me alone, once again. I watched each Divine walk through, following Eli’s commands, none of their steps hesitant. Once the last Divine was gone, I used the last of my strength, closing the portal, trapping the Darkness where it would remain, knowing that none of the humans would ever realize what could have happened to them.

Surveying the empty room, the silence echoed, strangling me. I had fought so hard the past months to not be alone. To build the family I desperately craved. And now, I was the only Divine in the world.

“Well, now that you’ve trapped us here, how about we take all this time to catch up on the past twenty years, dear daughter?”

The haughty voice sounded from behind me, chills running up my spine. Because I wasn’t the last Divine in the realm and in this moment, I would have preferred the loneliness. Turning towards the man, I thought of what I had just done. I had said a final goodbye to every person I loved. I had trapped myself in a realm that I would never fit in with. And now I stood before the man who had killed my mother, who had tried to killme. The man who was by blood, the only real family I truly had in the world. His deranged smile struck me to my core, and I knew the prophecy only spoke the truth.

The Enchantress would make the ultimate sacrifice.
