“Well,” he fumbles. “It’s not like I’m aware of their underhanded dealings. I have to find the money where I can. I think you don’t understand how a campaign really works.”

This seems to enrage her, and I’m trying not burst with pride.

“Senator Craig, I make it my mission to know how every campaign runs, and I think you’re undermining every good thing we’ve done for you.”

The Senator looks on edge now. He’s obviously taken aback and doesn’t know what to say.

“Senator Craig, what started out as a great campaign you have managed to make a big mess of. By taking money from those questionable lobby groups, you have single-handedly ruined yourself. Our firm will no longer be representing you.”

With that, she rises to leave, and I follow her. This girl is on fire. I can’t even believe she had the balls to just do that.

“Good day, Senator Craig,” I say simply.

Nicole marches out of the office and through the lobby.

“Well, that was quick,” I remarked.

“Adam, did you honestly believe I hadn’t done my homework on Senator Craig? He’s such a public figure, how could I not know what he was really up to? This is what I do best. I think you were trying to test me.”

This girl is sharp; I’ll give her that for sure. It was a test, and she passed with flying colors.

“Nicole, I think you’re gonna make a perfect fit for our firm. You’re just the kind of person we need.”

Adam

Once we leave Senator Craig’s building, I sweep Nicole up in my arms and kiss her. Her body feels so good engulfed by mine. It’s as if she was always meant to be there.

Damn, what are these new feelings arising? I’m not a one-woman kind of guy. But for Nicole at this point, I’d be anything.

I’m becoming invested in her, especially after seeing her on fire in the Senator’s office.

“You impressed me so much in there,” I tell her. “And to tell him we’re not gonna be his firm anymore, well, that took a lot of courage.”

I never dreamed in a million years she’d take it that far. I thought maybe she’d be suspect of his character and take him down a notch. But to make the executive decision we are no longer his representation?

She must be feeling pretty comfortable at the firm of Holt, Banks, and Shea.

“This is why we took you on, Nicole. You’re a spitfire, and that’s what we need. Politics can be ruthless and you have to be able to tell bullshit from truth. And by the looks of it, you have a pretty good handle on that.”

She’s beaming under my praise, and I love to see her happy.

“You really think I did good in there?” she asks.

“You were astonishing,” I say with all sincerity. “Senator Craig is definitely full of crap. And I admit we wanted to test you.

“He was on his way out, and I’m glad you were the one to kick him to the curb. You deserved to do it. I’m so proud of you.”

I lead her to the waiting limousine and we have mid-afternoon drinks to celebrate.

“The funny thing is, Adam, I wasn’t even nervous. I felt like I was where I needed to be. It’s always been my dream to go up against political players, especially the corrupt ones. I love to find out the dirt and then to make them pay for it.”

Nicole is fucking amazing. She has the same drive and spirit that Cameron and I do. It’s what made this company.

We knew that there were a lot of deceitful political players out there, and we wanted to be the firm to take them down. And now that we’ve added Nicole to our company, the fit seems just right.

She’s definitely more than just a sexual ingénue to me. She someone I can really trust and respect. For me to say that takes a lot.

When you work in politics, you see a lot of corruption, and I like how Nicole has a specific eye for weeding that out.

I tell her as much. “You remind me of myself when I first started. I was hungry to unearth all the immoral things that were happening within politics. By doing that, you really have a say in what goes on in the world. By doing what you did in there, well, you’re making the world a better place.”

I hate to be sappy, but it’s the truth. You’re either on the side of what’s right or you’re on the side of what’s wrong.

“Adam, I’m glad to hear you say so. For a long time, I’ve known that my principles and forthrightness were my most important assets. I rely on having integrity, and I love that you see that.

“Manipulative and circumspect politicians have always been obvious to me. I hope to make it my mission in this world to uncover all their uncouth behaviors…”
