The fae blinked. “What what?”

She narrowed her eyes. “What do you know about this amulet? And don’t give me your fae non-answers.”

River seemed confused. “Why do you think I would know anything?”

“Because you’re giving me a non-answer. Have you seen this before?”

“No,” River replied. “I’ve never seen it before today. Happy now?”

Naia raised an eyebrow, but then turned to Fel. “So this was already used? And yet we’re in this situation? What crap did we do?”

“I don’t know.” Fel had the same questions. He turned to the other dragons. “Do you know anything about this?”

“No,” Tzaria said, which was quite disappointing. She seemed to always have an answer for everything.

River pointed to it. “Perhaps this could be our key. Instead of trying to figure out when or if it was used, we could be strategic about it and go back to the moment when everything started.”

Tzaria closed her eyes. “It’s never one single event, but a series.”

River shook his head. “There’s usually a trigger. We see things as a series, but there was something that caused it.”

Right. Except that using the amulet in a wrong way, in theory, could rip reality or something. And then, was it a bad thing to rip a reality that was about to turn horrific? There was only one thing Fel had to say about it. “We need to return to a time we remember.”

Naia frowned. “I guess if you die or something, I can come back to this moment and say that the plan flopped?”

“In theory you would have already returned, so no.”

River shook his head. “I say it’s nonsense to try to find the moment it was used. It’s a tool we can use for the best.”

Tzaria was thoughtful. “It’s probably quite dangerous, though.”

River rolled his eyes. “Everything is.”

Fel was getting anxious with this conversation. “Shall we move? Go to the Iron Citadel and get Cynon while he’s sleeping?”

“What’s the hurry?” Naia asked.

Tzaria took a deep breath. “Once he latches on a proper vessel, he can… do more things. Like what happened to that iron dome. And if his egg turns into a dragon, it’s going to be even harder. At the point things are, it could happen at any minute.”

“Right.” River smiled. “Aren’t we glad we’re in the nick of time? I mean, it’s not like the dragons could have figured it out earlier or anything.”

“The timing is perfect,” Tzaria said. “There’s evil in this world, but there’s also a greater plan. We needed you to have been the vessel, and to be able to go everywhere in that castle, we needed the iron dragon to have been born and raised, and to be strong in his magic. This is the time. And we can act on it.”

Naia shook her head. “One hour planning won’t hurt us.”

Ekateni sighed. “One hour arguing, you mean.”

He had a point. Maybe. This decision was too sudden.

Tzaria then said, “Risomu should come as well because he has his dragon form. We might need fire. I can also walk in the hollow, and while we don’t glamour ourselves as well as fae, we can walk unnoticed in a castle.”

“We could split, then,” River said.

“You’ll grant us access there. And a bigger group is better. In case we face trouble.”

Naia touched the necklace with the amulet. “If you take too long to return, I’m not going to think twice before using this, no matter the cost. So be careful.”

Tzaria got up. “Let’s go, then.”
