He let out a shaky breath, lowering the gun. He put it in his belt again, his eyes never leaving hers. "Sorry," he muttered, as if what he did was completely normal.

The shock subsided after a moment, but not entirely. "What's wrong?" she whispered.

He closed his eyes, then sighed, walked toward her quickly, and wrapped her up in his arms.

Her body still shivered slightly but he held her tight. "Xavier?" she called, her voice small.

"My love," he whispered into her hair.

She melted into his arms and relaxed. "What's wrong, Xav? Are you okay?"

He shook his head.

"What happened?" she asked softly, running her fingers on his back. He tightened his hold around her.

He stayed silent, and she got hit by the worst memory of her life. This was the same kind of silence Xavier had acquired when he'd broken her the news of her father's death.

She pulled back and looked into his eyes. "What happened?" she asked firmly.

"I... I just..." He held her face. "Don't hate me."

Her face drained of expressions. "Okay, I don't like this, Xavier. Is the gang giving you a hard time?"

He looked at her for a moment, as if contemplating. He leaned down and kissed her lips, but she pulled back quickly, shaking her head.

"It's just the gang. Sean wants me to return or else he'd turn me in," he said, rubbing his thumb against her skin.

"What? He can't do that. For one, he'd have to tell them that he's the gang leader. And turn you in for what? He's got nothing on you."

"He's tight with the police. He'll have me arrested in no time."

She pried herself away from his hold, but he grabbed her and pulled her to himself. She wrapped her arms around him again.

She said, "We have contacts here. It'll be okay. We're with you."

"Okay," he said. "Okay. Just stay with me."

Okay... It was gonna be okay. She wondered why he didn't ask for any more details. He didn't even argue.

"I'm here," she said. "Are you gonna be okay?"

"Of course," he murmured into her hair.

After a long moment of holding onto her, he pulled back and looked at her from head to toe. He smiled. "You look like a dream, my love."

She grinned. "Thank you. Chris gifted this."

His smile fell. "Oh. Right." He moved back, letting her go. "Of course. How was the event?"

She walked back, smiling, and sat on the sofa beside the table she'd kept her purse on. "It was good."

He sat on the opposite sofa. "What did you two do?"

"Um, nothing much. It was just charity." She shrugged, the feel of Chris's lips on hers etched into her mind. She looked down, afraid Xavier might see it in her eyes. "Nothing exciting."

"Did you do charity? How does it work?"

He sounded genuinely interested, so she looked at him again and smiled. "It was an auction."
