She smiled, handing him back his coat. He draped it over his arm and watched her walk away with one hand holding her clutch, the other holding up her gown from the side.

He let his smile fall, feeling the tightness of his chest grow. Letting go of the breath he'd been holding, his lips tucked down, tears blurring his vision, and he felt his heart snap inside his chest.

He gulped and got back into his car. Waiting for a few moments and gripping the steering wheel tight, he took a deep breath.

Making her smile today was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do. Loving Giselle was inevitable, yet the most painful thing he'd ever experienced. And being taken for granted was his form of self-harm.

His phone beeped. Glancing at the message from the notification bar, he frowned. It was Alex.

Alex: Busy with work. Can't call, don't be a baby. Just got an update that the man we'd caught in Abbott's case, that John guy, spilled his gang's name. It's called Wrath, lol. Who names their gang Wrath?

Anyway, he said that he was a new addition (as if), and the leader had planned Abbott's murder to frame some guy. So far he's too afraid to spill names, but it's a matter of hours, I assure you. We're looking into it.

Ciao x

Chris sighed and forwarded the message to Giselle, unable to find the strength to face her again so soon. Besides, this wasn't even significant information. He needed the killer's name.

He'd deal with everything tomorrow. This night was already weighing down on him.

Chapter 31

Giselle entered her empty house an hour from midnight with a smile on her face, the pearl necklace resting on her collarbone. Ana had retired to her home. The central heater kept the house warm, and all the lights were dimmed.

Undoing her sandals, she removed them before heading toward the stairs leading to her room but stopped in her tracks. She'd heard a male voice. Someone was in her drawing room, seemingly talking on the phone. Her own phone buzzed in her clutch, but she ignored it.

Tip-toeing, she walked in the direction of the source, her heart beating fast. She peeked into the room and sighed a breath of relief. It was Xavier. He had his back to her, unaware of her presence.

The guilt Chris had successfully removed during their ride back home, dripped over her again like molten lava. She let out a breath, reminding herself of his words.

It meant nothing, even though the moment Chris had touched her lips with his, she'd lost herself.

She wasn't unfaithful, even though her heart had betrayed her and now all she could think of was how well she and Chris fit together.

She was perfect. She smiled at the memory. Chris knew how to make everything okay.

"What do you mean? What am I supposed to do with that information, Stewart?" said Xavier into the phone.

Her eyebrows merged, and she closed her mouth that she was about to use to gain his attention.Stewart. Why was Xavier still in touch with his gang members?

He continued in shock, "What? Are you sure? But... How am I supposed to tell her?"

Tell me what? Her heart picked up its pace.

"Okay," he said. "What other choice do I have, man? It's either this or..." He paused. "No. I would never... I'd turn myself in. I won't flee like you."

Giselle resisted the urge to interrupt and ask. She gulped instead. What's going on?

"To hell with Sean! He ruined me! I hope he rots wherever he is!" His voice got louder, harsher. Then he yelled, "Fuck!" into the phone and threw it across the room.

She flinched at his rage and cowered back.

Holding his head, he bent, his body shuddering.

Giselle took a deep breath, trying to control her racing heart. All of her instincts told her to run, but she walked in, putting her clutch on a side table. The sound seemed to snap him out.

Xavier turned in a swift motion and pointed his gun at her, his eyes red, nose flaring.

She gasped and took a step back. Her eyes widened. "Xav?"
