He left me early the next morning, before I was quite awake. I remember he leaned over me to kiss me and whisper my name before he nuzzled my ear and patted my ass. Then he was gone, and I heard the lock click after him in my tiny house, where sound carried easily. A few seconds later, I heard his car start up. I rolled over on his side of the sofa and pulled his pillow close, burying my face in it. His scent drifted over me, and I moaned as my cock filled out again. I lay there for a while and finally drifted back to sleep, but the life of a baker required me to rise early, so it was only an hour or so later that my alarm went off.

When I was getting ready for my day, I noticed I was leaking a little, and I quickly took my omega pill. I made a mental note to call my doctor later that morning, because I hadn’t missed any dosages, and yet my secretions had come back. I knew what my grandmother had told me, but I still wanted to double check with a doctor.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want children—like I said, someday, but far in the future. But I had no desire for them now, when I was still trying to build my business and make a success of myself so I could buy my contract from my father. I got dressed and headed to my little shop.

When I came out of the front door, Josh was parked in my driveway in one of Dominic’s big black cars.

I went over to speak to him. “How long have you been here?”

“About a half hour.”

“You don’t have to drive me to work.”

“According to the boss, I do.”

I sighed and slipped into the plush back seat, where warmth quickly enveloped me. It would be far too easy to get used to this. Why was I fighting it so hard?

We were busy all morning at the shop. Hailey left to deliver the trays of pastries, sandwiches and snacks to the studio, and I began to serve the morning customers. They kept me pretty busy, and Dominic texted to say hello and that he’d be tied up in meetings all day. He asked if he could see me that evening. I sent back a “yes” and a heart emoji.

I did want to see him, but the idea that he might be my true mate had made me nervous and anxious. I knew that to a wealthy man like Dominic, my small business must seem like peanuts, but it was important to me, and I needed to feel him out on his ideas regarding careers for omegas. I was afraid he might dismiss my dreams as silly or unimportant and demand I stay meekly at home like a good omega and bear his children. My feelings for him were too new and too fragile to risk easily, so I was almost afraid to broach the subject.

Finally, the lunch crowd died down enough for me to put in a quick call to my doctor. The nurse put me on hold to check for his next available appointment and then came back on the line.

“I don’t suppose you could be here in an hour, could you? We had a last-minute cancellation.”

“Oh. Well, yeah, I can be there. The office is just down the street. An hour, you said?”

“Yes, that’s right. Bring a list of any current medications, and we’ll see you at three o’clock.”

I ended the call and went to find Damon to tell him I was closing the shop early today. In another half hour, I was heading out the door to my doctor’s office. Josh was parked at the street, so I went over to tell him I was walking since it was so sunny out. He gave me a long look, and then started his car.

“What are you doing? I told you I was walking.”

“Okay. I’ll just follow you.”

“But that’s stupid, Josh,” I said, raising my voice a little. “Just stay here or go home or whatever. I can walk a couple of blocks to the doctor.”

“I’ll follow you.”

I blew out a long breath and spun around to stalk off. Let him follow then. It was a free country. Still, I was seething as I hurried down the sidewalk, refusing to glance behind me to see that stupid big car following along. I was having a serious talk with Dominic about this tonight.

I never even looked back when I reached the medical building that housed several doctor’s offices and went inside. I checked in and took a seat in the waiting room, still feeling out of sorts. This whole thing was getting out of hand.

When I finally got to see the doctor, I told him how I was concerned about the secretions starting up again, though I hadn’t missed any of my pills. He examined me and then helped me sit up, clutching the little paper “sheet” to my chest.

“Everything looks fine, Jax. I don’t see anything wrong, though I’ll have the nurse come in to take blood and urine specimens and we’ll check those. Have you met someone recently? Some new Alpha, perhaps?”

I flushed. Dr. Manzetti was one of the few doctors with any real knowledge of shifters, and that was because he was one himself. A wolf shifter, I was pretty sure, though he’d never said. I was pretty sure he was an Alpha.

“Yes, I have met someone. My grandmother told me old wives’ tales—she said an omega who met his true mate had practically no resistance to them when it comes to pregnancy.”

“Well,” he said, sitting on his little stool and typing his notes into a computer, “your grandmother may have been right.”

“Shit.”

He smiled gently. “There’s no evidence of such a thing, but many people believe it, and we don’t have any evidence against it either. I’ve witnessed it in my own practice here, and it’s a phenomenon that’s been written about in the medical journals. I’m afraid I can’t give you a definitive answer. The best advice I can give you is to stay on your pills but use protection if you have sex with this new Alpha of yours.”

“What kind of protection? Like condoms?”
