“Yes, like condoms. Now, you may have trouble getting your Alpha to agree to this plan, but if you don’t want babies in your immediate future, you’ll need to insist. In the meantime, the nurse will take her samples and our office will be in touch with the results.”

After checking to see if I needed refills on my prescriptions, he left, and I got ready to leave his office in a fog. That was so not the news I wanted to hear. I was so distracted, in fact, I came out of his office and got in the car with Josh.

“You want to go home now?”

“Yes, please.”

“Everything all right at the doctor’s office? You look a little upset.”

“Hmm? Oh no, I’m fine. Everything’s fine.”

But it wasn’t fine at all, and I worried about it all the way home. How was I going to tell Dominic I wouldn’t have sex with him again unless he used a condom? Dragons didn’t carry human diseases so I couldn’t use that as an excuse. I was just going to have to open up to him about how I wanted to have a career and run my own business. If he wanted to be in my life, he’d just have to deal with it.

Yeah, right, the smart-ass part of my brain replied. Tell the billionaire, alpha Red Dragon that you—the one he calls “his” omega—wants a career that doesn’t necessarily include being a baby factory. No problem. I’ll get right on it.

The problem was I had to, though, because he was coming over to my house soon and would undoubtedly expect to have sex again. I sighed so heavily Josh peered at me through the rear-view mirror.

“Are you sure you’re okay? The doc didn’t give you bad news, did he?”

“No, nothing like that.”

We rode the rest of the way in silence, though Josh kept darting glances back at me all the way while I chewed my lip and tried to figure out how I’d bring up the subject to Dominic.

Chapter Nine

Dominic

I arrived at Jax’s house around eight that evening, tired, hungry and out of sorts. I’d spent the afternoon involved in some complicated contract negotiations with Valleywood Studios, and I was looking forward to sitting on that lumpy little sofa next to Jax, while he played one of his awful movies and simply breathe him in. That sweet scent of his soothed something deep inside me, while at the same time making my dick hard enough to cut glass.

Maybe I’d just take him directly to bed and soothe my dragon that way. Neither I nor my Dragon would probably be very good company until I did.

He opened the door before I even reached it and I hoped that meant he was as eager as I was. Instead, he greeted me with a chaste little kiss and announced that dinner was ready.

I was touched by the idea that he’d cooked for me. It was sweet, and I tried to act appreciative, though all I really wanted was to just sit quietly and decompress. I followed him into his tiny kitchen anyway and sat down at the little table.

“It’s just a casserole and salad,” he said, putting a plate down in front of me. My stomach made a rumbling sound at the smell, and we both laughed.

“I’m hungry,” I said, giving him a little smile. “None of your sandwiches for lunch today.”

“Oh? Why not? I sent Josh over with your order.”

“No time. I had an appointment that ran late and then I had to go to the studio for a meeting. A rather long, contentious meeting.”

“I’m sorry you had a bad day,” he said. “Well, this is my nana’s chicken casserole recipe, and it’s usually a hit with everyone who tries it. Your Uncle Clive used to like it.”

“My uncle used to come here?”

“Oh yes, he came almost every night. My grandmother raised me, so I don’t really remember a time when Mr. Clive wasn’t in her life.”

“Are you saying they were in a romantic relationship?”

“Yes, of course.”

“My uncle was married.”

“Oh.” He looked surprised and a little uneasy. “I never heard him mention any wife.”

“She lived in France, on their estate. I believe she rarely came to the U.S.”
