Emily stopped and stared. “Oh, David! Oh, no! I—”

He held up his hand and shook his head. “It’s okay, Em. I don’t want to do business with that type of man, and once I explain to the board why I made the decision—without giving away your secret—I’m sure they’ll agree with me. We’re still a small company with morals.” He gave a tight smile. “I’m just going to have to work hard to replace that income.”

Emily hung her head. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered.

He tilted her head up with his finger. “Don’t apologize. Your dad is the one who needs to apologize.”

“But your company—”

He shook his head. “I still believe if we do the right thing, it will work out in the end.” He smiled. “I don’t want you worrying about this. Okay?” She pursed her lips and he raised his brows. “Promise me.”

“I’ll try.”

He chuckled. “I suppose that’s all I can expect. I appreciate you care so much.”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

He shrugged. “What do you think of the concert so far?”

She inhaled deeply. “I haven’t been to a concert in so long.” She sighed. “It’s wonderful.” She pushed aside the text from Mark. She didn’t want to worry David. She was already too much of a burden for him on this trip. He didn’t need anything else on his shoulders.

David chuckled again. “That bastard can reallyplay, can’t he?”

“Rafael?”

“I’d never call Mark Pierce a bastard.”

She giggled. “Me either.” She grimaced. “There’s a reason my father wanted me to study with Rafael. He’s an amazing musician.”

David nodded. “He is. Though Mark wasn’t as... engaging as usual. I wonder why.”

Emily wasn’t sure if she should tell David about her relationship with Mark and bit her lip.

“Emily, what do you know?”

She sighed, not wanting to lie to him. “I... know Mark,” she said, searching his eyes. For what, though, she wasn’t sure.

“Oh?” He raised his brows. “How did that come about?”

Emily gave a brief history of seeing him in the metro station and how they’d run into each other at rehearsal, and a bit about the time they’d spent together.

David smiled. “Ah, you must be the mysterious brunette Mark likes so much.”

“What?” Emily’s eyes widened.

“Abby’s been upset and she confessed to me about her relationship with Mark, but that he’d lost interest in her. She told meshe’d seen a pretty brunette at the open rehearsal and that Mark had been totally smitten with her.” He chuckled. “I completely understand that sentiment, by the way.” He winked at her.

“Mark says he likes me,” Emily said, shaking her head. “I don’t understand why.”

“Why wouldn’t he? You’re a pretty spectacular young woman.”

She smiled, her cheeks warming. “But I’m—” She waved her hands in the air. “You know what I am.”

He gave a slow nod and inhaled. “Ah. You haven’t told him where you work?”

“No. I have.” She pressed her lips together and shook her head. “He deserves better.”

“Mark is a special young man who knows how to look past superficial surfaces to the real person inside. I think he learned that from his family.”
