“You know about Mark’s family?”

“A little. We’ve spent quite a bit of time with him.”

Emily chewed her lip. “This is weird.”

“What? That you’ve slept with me, whose wife is Mark’s former lover?”

Emily shrugged. “Yeah.”

“It is weird. These days, though, anything goes.” He looked thoughtful for a long moment. “I think he’d be good for you. He’s a kind young man and would treat you right.”

“He is kind.” She fished out her phone and showed him the text from Mark. “He knows I’m here.”

David narrowed his eyes as he read the text. “He’s warning you to stay away from Alvarez?” David pressed his lips together and shook his head. “Please be careful when you’re not by my side.”

“I will.”

“Did you respond to Mark?”

Emily shook her head. “I don’t know what to say.”

David smiled. “Tell him you will and you’ll try to find him later.”

Emily typed in the message and glanced up to receive a reassuring nod before she hit send.

“You should have pepper spray or something for protection” David said. “Put that on your to-do list. I want you to be safe.”

Emily pulled out the tablet and did as David asked, adding it to the small list of items he’d asked for earlier in the day.

Mark madehis way through the backstage area and outside at intermission, needing a few minutes of fresh air. He shuddered, glad to be away from Alvarez. He’d wanted to listen to the Schubert and had been hesitant to let Rafael out of his sight.

He shook his head. How was he going to make it through these next few days?

He smiled. Emily was here.

Somehow.

He frowned, still not understanding why she was here, but at least he’d warned her about Alvarez.

Maybe they could spend some time together during the week. His schedule wasn’t packed.

Was hers?

Why was she here?

He stood in the shadows of the concert hall looking out over the garden as long as he could, reluctant to go back inside. Whenever he played here, this was his favorite spot. It wasn’t like the gardens back home, but there was a semblance of peace about it.

Concertgoers milled about, chatting or drinking.

A familiar figure caught his attention as he turned to go back inside, standing next to another familiar figure. He squinted in the dim light of the garden. Emily stood next to... David Powell? They leaned into one another as they spoke and Mark’s heart fell.

Was she here with David? Why?

He ran his hands through his hair. What on earth had brought those two together?
