Why did she work in a place like that? Was it voluntary? Had she been coerced? Tricked?

Did she like it?

He shook his head. No, that expression on her face—oh, her expressive eyes!—told him she didn’t like it. She was ashamed.

No wonder she’d been reluctant to tell him where she worked.

But what did he do with that information? Should he try and help her?

How could he help her?

He sat up and reached for his phone. He scrolled through his contacts until he found Emily’s name, and hit call.

She didn’t answer and the image of her rolling around her bed with a man made him wince. She wouldn’t sleep with him, but she’d sleep with anyone who walked through the doors of that restaurant?

He ended the call as it went to voicemail and tossed his phone on the floor. What the hell was he thinking, getting involved with a woman like her?

But he wasn’t involved. She’d put strict walls up around her. She hadn’t lied. She hadn’t let him think anything would come of them spending time together either. She’d reluctantly gone to his house, wary of his attempt at seductions.

Then that kiss happened...

He closed his eyes. How could something so simple as a kiss be seared so deeply into his memory? He’d kissed hundreds of women. Several within the last week. What was so special about Emily?

He opened his eyes and stood, not understanding why he did. He just... needed to do something. He blew out a breath as he picked up his phone. He’d leave a message if she didn’t answer. It rang... and rang... and—

“Hello.”

“Emily?”

“Mark?”

Mark smiled. “I tried calling a few minutes ago...”

She paused. “I was in the middle of something.”

“Do you need to go?”

“No. I’m... done.”

He frowned. “You sound tired.”

“Late night.”

“Working?”

She paused. “Yeah.”

“Oh.”

Curiosity burned in his chest, but it wasn’t any of his business, was it? He shook his head at himself. He wanted to see her. He should have come up with a reason before he called, instead of them both being on the phone without talking. “So... I was wondering if you’d like to... um...”Shit. “Do you want to go get some coffee?”

She didn’t answer right away and he pulled the phone away to make sure they were still connected. They were.

“I have to work at six.”

“It’s only one.”

“Yeah.” She sighed. “Why?”
