“I do...”

“Emily?” David ducked his head and lifted her chin to make her meet his eyes. “We talked about this, right? You won’t upset me if you tell me.” He chuckled. “Hell, it might be interesting to find out if I’m right.”

“Are you sure?”

“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want to know.” His eyes sparkled with curiosity.

“I don’t know if they’re sleeping together...”

“Is he handsome and around your age?”

“Very handsome and a few years older than me.”

“Then she’s sleeping with him.”

Emily prayed she hadn’t winced, and David didn’t react, so she guessed she’d managed to keep her expression neutral. For once.

“Tell me.” He laughed. “You’ve got me all curious now.”

Emily sighed, knowing Geoffrey would be furious if David told him she’d not answered his questions. “Mark Pierce. I saw them at the DC Symphony’s open rehearsal a few days ago.”

David’s eyes widened and his mouth dropped open. “Abby’s sleeping with Mark?” He stared for a long moment and Emily’s heart pounded in her throat. Then he leaned his head back and let out a hearty laugh. “Well, doesn’t that beat all?” He raised his eyebrows at Emily. “You’re certain it was Mark Pierce?”

Emily nodded, relieved he wasn’t upset, but her heart breaking at the idea of Abby and Mark together. She wondered if she could face Mark again. Oh, she recognized her own hypocrisy—she was a prostitute, upset the man she had a crush on was having an affair with a married woman.

A woman married to the man she’d spent the night with.

Twice.

It still hurt.

David was still chuckling and shaking his head. “She knows how to get what she wants. Mark has a reputation, of course, but I never imagined Abby would get involved with a celebrity. Her dreams have finally come true.”

Emily gave a tight smile, wishing he’d change the subject.

David stood and pet her head. “Are you working this weekend?”

Emily nodded. “Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

“I’ll make sure to stop by.” He leaned down and kissed her cheek. “I’m enjoying spending time with you, Emily.” He stood, his eyes filled with amusement. “I hope you’ll trust me with your real name someday.”

“Why?”

He tilted his head and shrugged. “Because I like you and hope things continue progressing between the two of us. That would include trust.” His eyes turned soft. “I have a feeling you’re running from something bad and I wish I could help.”

Emily looked away and he ran his hands through her hair. “I’ll see you this weekend.”

He left the room and the condo door opened and closed a few moments later. She lay back on the bed and closed her eyes. So far, moving to Section One had been a nice change from her previous life.

Mostly.

She hoped it would stay that way.

Twenty-Eight

Mark sprawledon the couch he and Emily had sat on together while they listened toMetacosmos. He stared out the window at the clouds passing by, listening to the tree scratch at the glass as the wind tossed the branches back and forth. The second movement of Beethoven’s 7th symphony1played at a low volume in the background. It fit his mood.

He’d just gotten off the phone with Sam a few minutes ago. Yes, Sam had confirmed, Emily did work at Café Milan. She was in Section One, where the customers paid a premium to be seated, and where the girls were known to prostitute themselves to anyone interested.
