Emily gave a small shrug. “I’m okay. She was busy.”

Mark frowned and stood. “What kind do you want?”

“It’s okay.”

“No, it’s not. What kind do you want?”

She blinked. “Um, green tea with peppermint?”

Mark nodded and strode across the shop, a frown on his face. The barista’s face brightened as he approached the counter and spoke to her. She gave an apologetic smile as she handed him the package. Mark returned to the table and handed the packet of tea to Emily. “They’re usually more attentive. When I got the water, I told her you’d be coming up to get it.” He shook his head. “I’m sorry.”

Emily shrugged. “I’m sure you get lots of attention wherever you go.”

“I don’t think they know the difference between an oboe and a cello here.”

“But they know a handsome man when he steps in front of them.”

Mark’s eyebrows raised and he grinned. Emily’s cheeks burned.

“So you think I’m handsome?” he asked, chuckling.

Emily shrugged.

He tilted his head.

She arched a brow. “Your ego doesn’t know it already?”

Mark laughed. “Touché.”

Emily removed the lid from the steaming water and dunked the tea bag in a few times before replacing the lid to let it steep.

“Did you get things sorted with your boss?”

Emily blinked, confused. “What?”

“When he called the other day. He sounded angry. Wanted to make sure you got things sorted.”

“You heard him?” She stared at the cup in front of her.

“He was rather loud.”

“He gets that way.” She paused and tried not to wince as she remembered the long night with him. “Yeah. Got things sorted.”

“I’m sorry for what happened at the open rehearsal.”

“There’s nothing to apologize for.” She shrugged. “To me.”

Mark chuckled. “Abby said I should have gone with you.”

Emily looked up, her eyes wide. “Why?” Why would his lover want him to go out with another woman?

He opened his mouth but closed it again. “Abby and I can get together any time. She knew I wanted to have lunch with you.”

Emily looked down at her tea and nodded vaguely. “Have you known her for long?”

“Many years. She and her husband are big supporters of the arts. They always sponsored some sort of party whenever I came into town.”

“Is that how you met?”
