Mark nodded, narrowing his eyes. “Yeah. Why?”

She shook her head. “No reason.” It wasn’t any of her business who he slept with. “So, how was rehearsal today?”

* * *

Mark staredat Emily for a long moment. Did she know he and Abby were having an affair? How could she? There was a look in her eyes, though... He couldn’t quite name the emotion.

What had she asked? “Rehearsal today?” He shrugged. “Obnoxious as usual.”

“Is he really so bad?”

Mark frowned. “I hate what he’s doing to our music.”

“What did he do today?”

“We were working onMetacosmos.” He shook his head. “It frustrates me. I want to hear what you hear in it. But playing it... It makes me angry.”

She smiled. “Maybe that’s what the composer was trying to do.”

Mark arched a brow. “Piss musicians off?”

Emily shrugged. “Modern composers seem to be more interested in shocking people and making a statement than making a melody. It could be part of her plan was to... upset the norms.”

He shook his head and stared at her. “I don’t understand how you can talk about it so calmly.”

“I’m not the one who has to play it.” Her eyes sparkled and a dimple made an appearance on her cheek.

God, she was beautiful when she was happy! “Maybe I should make you play it so you can suffer with me.” He said it half-jokingly, but when her eyes widened, an idea struck him. This could be a way to spend time with her without her feeling threatened. “You should try playing again.”

She shook her head. “No, I can’t. It’s been too long.”

“It’s like riding a bike. It’ll come back to you.”

“It’s been five years, Mark. I can’t anymore.”

“Never know unless you try.”

She bit her lip. He could see the struggle in her eyes. She wanted to. He stood and held out his hand.

She stared at it. “What are you doing?”

“Taking you back to my place to seduce you.” Her eyes widened even more and he laughed. “I’m kidding. I’m going to put a violin in your hands and see what happens.”

“No, I—”

He took her hand and pulled her to her feet, picked up her tea and handed it to her. “C’mon.”

“Mark, I—”

He took her hand again and pulled her close. “I can see in your eyes you want to,” he said in a low voice. And he needed to hear her play. For his own sanity. “Please?”

She rolled her eyes and sighed. “You look like a little beggar boy when you say it like that.”

“Say what? Please?”

She nodded.

“Did it work?”
