“You’re going with David on his business trip in the morning.”

“I—” She blinked. “What?”

Geoffrey frowned, and she swallowed.

“My secretary had a baby a few months ago and can’t travel,” David said. “I need someone to go with me to act as my assistant. Geoffrey offered to let you come along to help me out.”

Her eyes widened as she stared at David. “You want me to act as your assistant? I’ve never done anything like that.”

“Becky will be available for any questions. Everything will be in the schedule and folders on the tablet. She’s making up a detailed list for you to follow. All you have to do is make sure I keep to my schedule.” He smiled. “I tend to talk too much.”

She blinked and looked between the two men. “I—” Geoffrey glared and she forced a smile. “Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Powell. I’ll do my best.”

“I know you’ll do a great job.” He gave a warm smile. “Geoffrey said he’d send Becky your clothing sizes and she’ll have clothes sent to the hotel for you to wear since I’m assuming you don’t have any business suits?”

She shook her head, still trying to wrap her mind around the news.

David put his hand on hers. “Try not to worry. Just do as Becky has laid out and you’ll be fine.” He drained his glass and stood. “I’ll pick you up at six tomorrow morning at your condo. Wear whatever you’ll be comfortable in for a plane ride.”

“I-I don’t have any ID to get on a plane.”

David shrugged. “We’re not flying commercial.” He kissed her cheek. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

He shook hands with Geoffrey and left. Emily stared at Geoffrey. “You’re okay with me going out of town with him?”

“Don’t fuck it up.” He glanced at Table One. “At least Neil got his fun before he left. He won’t be going home with you. You have to pack.”

“He’ll be disappointed.”

Geoffrey shrugged. “I’ll find someone else to pacify him. He’s not picky.” He stepped closer. “I will leave you with a reminder to behave while you’re gone.” His eyes turned dark and Emily shivered. “Finish up with them.” He nodded toward the table. “I’ll take you home when we close.”

Someone shookEmily out of her sleep. She groaned as she turned onto her side.

“Emily. Time to wake up.”

She opened her eyes at Geoffrey’s voice, trying to figure out why he was waking her before dawn.

“You have the trip with David today, remember?” He shoved her backward and she yelped as she fell off the bed. She hit the wooden floor with a hard thump and gasped, opening her eyes.

“I remember,” she whispered, crawling to her hands and knees for a moment before standing. She winced as she stood and blinked, trying to wake up.

“You have an hour until he picks you up.” Geoffrey glared and Emily hurried to dress. “I expect him to have a glowing report of you when he returns.” His eyes hardened. “I better not hear of anyone complaining about you at the conference.”

Emily’s brows knit together in confusion. Why would someone complain about her? “What sort of conference is this?” she asked, her voice hoarse.

“That’s for David to explain. Now get the fuck out of here and be presentable when he picks you up.”

Emily winced as she dressed, picked up her shoes, and hurried out of the condo. She took the elevator to her floor and hurried to her own place.

She frowned as she studied herself in the bathroom mirror. Light bruises on her hips from Neil slamming her into the table the night before, but no other marks. Geoffrey knew how to hurt her without leaving bruises. Her hand still ached from when he’d squeezed it the other evening.

An hour later, she was dressed in her best clothes, a simple black skirt and a green blouse. Her hair and makeup were done and she had packed a small bag with toiletries, a change of clothes, and PJs, in case something happened and there weren’t clothes to wear when she got to the hotel.

Someone knocked on the door and she went to answer it, expecting David to have sent someone up to get her. But no. David stood there, wearing jeans and a polo shirt. He smiled and kissed her cheek. “I thought I told you to dress comfortably?”

Emily shrugged. “I wanted to look nice for you.”
