He chuckled and a stewardess approached him with a glass of orange juice and a leather portfolio. “Thanks, Jenny.”

She nodded and turned to Emily. “What would you like to drink, miss?”

Emily glanced at David and then back to the stewardess. “Oh, um... Do you have tea? Hot tea?”

Jenny nodded, a warm smile on her face. “Many varieties. Any particular one you’d like?”

“English breakfast, if you have it.”

“Yes, miss.” she smiled and walked away.

“So you’re a tea drinker?” David asked.

Emily shrugged. “When I can.”

“I could never get into tea. Not a coffee guy either. So, orange juice it is. Occasionally a cola, but I’m trying to cut back.”

Emily smiled and gazed out the window as the jet taxied away from the hangar. David was comfortable to be around. That must be why she opened up to him.

She held back a wince. Mark was easy to talk to, too. He’d opened up to her in hopes she’d open up to him. And she had. Too much.

But he hadn’t rejected her. Why not?

She wished she’d gone over to his house to practice his violin this weekend, but her hand still ached and she’d been too exhausted. The men Geoffrey had sent her home with weren’t kind and she’d not wanted to do anything except rest before work.

The plane paused for a moment and Jenny returned with Emily’s tea. “Are you all right to have this during takeoff?” she asked with a kind smile.

Emily nodded. “I won’t spill.”

Jenny glanced at David who nodded with a smile. “I’m sure she’s done this before.”

Emily bit her lip, not wanting to admit that yes, she’d done this many times.

“Jenny, once we’re in the air, would you please bring the bag Becky packed for Emily?”

“Of course, sir.”

Emily closed her eyes and held her tea as the plane rushed smoothly to the end of the runway and took flight. A thrill ran through her body and she smiled, remembering the sensation of flying. It had been a long time.

When the jet leveled off, she opened her eyes. David watched her, an amused twinkle in his eyes. “Youhavedone this before?”

She gave a nervous smile. “Yeah.”

Jenny returned with a thin leather bag and handed it to Emily.

“There should be a tablet in there,” David said.

Emily flipped open the flap and fished out a tablet about the size of a piece of paper, placing the bag on the floor next to her. She glanced at David before pushing the power button and waiting for it to turn on. It was an expensive model but why was she surprised? David was the CEO of a huge company. Of course he would have the best of the best.

It was so familiar. All of it. The limo, the private jet. It was comfortable. After living meal to meal, being abused, and not having enough money to do much of anything, it all was bringing back her childhood.

She wasn’t sure how she felt about that.

The tablet turned on and she glanced at David.

“What’s the password?” she asked.

“Warecore05.”
