“Yes, how dare you not get word out to me when you’re a prisoner on an alien planet?” I reply.

That makes her smile.

“I know you were lonely, but I’m not angry with you,” I say. “Not at all. I knew something was wrong after a while, when you were supposed to go back home. And then you weren’t at work after your assignment on Selene, and I knew I couldn’t ask, but when your parents still didn’t know anything about your whereabouts…”

“You came to save me,” she says softly. “Of course you came to save me.”

“Well, like you said, Zaire would’ve found you eventually.”

“I already knew where she was,” Zaire says as he stands up. “Corvus will be okay. It’s a flesh wound.”

“A painful flesh wound,” Corvus corrects from behind him.

I laugh as Zaire smiles. “Like I said, he’ll be okay. And I always knew where you were, I just didn’t have the means to get you out. Not without their help or your friend leading the way here.”

“Yeah, she’s pretty badass like that,” Layla says, standing up as he extends his hand toward her. He clasps her in a tight embrace and presses his mouth against her and I watch she sinks into his touch. She pulls away from him and looks at me with glassy eyes. “Do you mind if we table this?”

“What, so you can catch up with your boyfriend, too?” I ask. “Unacceptable.”

“What’s a boyfriend?” Zaire asks.

Layla and I both laugh. “I’m sure she’ll tell you all about it soon,” I say as she drags him into the bedchamber on the ship.

Once the modular door slides behind them, Corvus turns to me, his eyes a pale pink. “So,” he says. “Whatisa boyfriend?”

“So,” I say.

Corvus eyes me. “So…”

“How’s your leg?” I ask.

He gives me a wry smile, his silver eyes sparkling with flecks of gold. “Is that really what you’re wondering about?”

I frown and lean against the wall behind me, crossing my arms in front of my chest. He doesn’t move—I guess probably because he can’t get up—but he watches me like he’s about to pounce. I reach up and play with my hair, twirling it around my fingers.

“You were willing to give yourself up to let us escape,” I say. “I guess I’m just wondering why.”

“I knew you would come and get me,” he scoffs.

“No, you didn’t,” I say. “I saw it in your face—you really thought you were about to die back there, and you wanted us to leave you. For what? What purpose would it serve?”

His tongue darts out to wet his lips, the silver piercing distracting me. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how gorgeous this man is, even if we part ways after this.

But will we?

“I wanted you to know that I’m not all bad,” he says quietly.

“I didn’t think you were,” I say.

“You forget I can tell when you’re lying,” he snorts. “And don’t get me wrong…you have every reason to think I’m the villain here. I’m not trying to excuse myself. I’ve been a bad man.”

“What?” I say. “Do you want me to punish you?”
