He huffs out a laugh. “Maybe.”

“That’s not really what I’m into,” I say. I gesture at the seat next to him. “Do you mind if I sit down?”

He shrugs. “By all means.”

I join him on the cot, looking down at his leg. It’s bandaged, but if Aelyd medicine is as good as I think it is, it probably doesn’t hurt too much anymore. Besides—the bullet only grazed him, I think.

“So what’s a boyfriend?” he says.

I roll my eyes. “Don’t play dumb.”

“I’m not,” he says. “It’s not like a husband, is it?”

“It’s more like…” I hum to myself as I think about. “Someone you’re not quite sure about yet.”

“But you sleep with them,” he concludes.

I shrug. “If you want to.”

I look over to find his eyes gleaming gold. He leans a bit closer, his eyes narrowing as he looks me over.

“Can I admit something to you?”

“Now’s the time,” I say. “Before we get back to Joya, I guess.”

Corvus smiles. “I did all this for you.”

I roll my eyes—again. His gunshot wound has made him corny, and I’m not the biggest fan. “I don’t love grand gestures.”

“That’s not what I mean,” he says. “I’m telling you I’m selfish. That I didn’t do this out of some kind of moral code or decision about what was right or wrong…I just did it because I want you, and because you wanted this. I would kill for you, Penn.”

Maybe I don’t love grand gestures…but I do love it when a man admits he would kill for me.

And really, what girl doesn’t?

“Is this your way of asking if you can be my boyfriend, Corvus?” I ask with a smile.

“So you’re still not sure about me,” he chuckles.

“Hm…well, I haven’t had a test drive yet.”

I slide my hand over his knee, squeezing his leg.

He winces.

“Oh, fuck,” I say, jerking my hand away. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay,” he says. “You’re not the only one who likes the pain.”

His lips finally find mine, kissing me languidly as his long fingers climb over my knee. It sends a tremor shooting through me, especially when my lips part and he presses his probing tongue into my mouth. I finally feel the cool metal of that tongue piercing, his other hand reaching up to grasp my chin and pull me closer.

I’m breathless when we pull away, opening my eyes to find him already gazing into mine.

“Gods, I’ve been wanting to do that for ages,” he says.

I laugh. “I’m really glad you’re not dead…because I was gonna be pissed if you died without me getting a chance to test out that tongue piercing.”

His hand climbs higher, just the barest glint of his Gift coming to life through my clothes. “There are some other places I would like to test it out—”
