I’ve heard her before in my head. Hell, I’ve talked to her. I need to concentrate and try to reach her.

Focus Mav, focus!

Closing my eyes, I concentrate on the woman I want. The one who’s captured me from the moment I saw her stepping out of the SUV in front of the club that night.

Her standing there, so innocent and unaware of the big bad warlock with his gaze focused on her.

“Shay, can you hear me?”I call out, praying that she hears me. But all I’m met with is silence. I know Dad said they warded the room against magic, but I could still hope the link we had worked. Since finding her, I hadn’t tried to use it, and hell, honestly I couldn’t even tell you how it happened before. I just felt her, wanted her, and she was there.

Closing my eyes, and breathing deeply, I try to center myself, clearing my mind of everything but Shay, then try again. “Shay, can you hear me? Please, baby, I need to know you are okay.”

Quiet, nothing, then a small voice, so low I almost don’t hear it, creeps inside my head.

“Maverick, is that you?”

“Yes, baby, it’s me. Are you okay? Who did that to your face?”Because the fucker is going to die, slowly and with a lot of pain, by my hands.

“It was Hugo,”her voice growing even lower, as his name seeps into my mind.

“Stay strong, baby. I’m going to make sure he pays for it. We will be out of here soon. I know the guys are looking for us; hell, at least for you. There’s no way they're goingto let you stay here. When they come, make sure you and Beba get out of here. Don’t worry about me.”

“No!”her scream rings through my head.“I’m not leaving you. We are getting out of here together. Are you sure they’re coming? How are they going to get in here? Find us?”The questions keep rolling off the tip of her tongue.

“I got to go, he's here….”are the last words I hear from her.

“Shay. Shay. Shay!!”I call out with no response from her. Who was there? Who was he? Is it my father? I swear to all that is just, if they hurt another part of her, I’ll go full-blown destroyer on this place.

Sitting back on the bed, I beat the back of my head against the wall. My anger is consuming me and without any way to let it out, this is all I can do.

That’s what I’m still doing when the door opens, and my father steps inside. Fuck! How much time has passed since I spoke with Shay? Was it enough for my father to leave her and come to me, or was the 'he' she mentioned someone entirely different? Time has become so intertwined together I don’t even know how to tell how much has passed.

“Son, is that really necessary?” he asks in the superior ass voice he loves to lord over everyone.

“Son? That’s a fucking joke. I’m your prisoner!” I spew at him, my lips open as I bare my teeth to him.

“Aww, you’re only locked in here because you’ve coveted our little witch all for yourself. Let’s not get the facts twisted, SON. You went against your family, your birthright to full power, for some pussy. Granted, she is a fine young thing, and so responsive. I’m starting to think you’re no longer needed. She’s completed the bond with that wretched animal. All I need to do now is cast the spell, linking her to me and I’ll have access to all of her power.” He turns, laughing like a madman, and exits the room, slamming the door behind him.

Rage consumes me, and I begin pulling frantically on the chains that have me confined. My dad’s words fill me with the anger I need to attempt to break free. Because if they mean what I think they do, he’s trying to link himself to my mate. And that’s only happening over my dead body. I fight with all my might against the chains. My wrists are bleeding from the bands cutting into them, and I feel myself growing weaker until I finally pass out.

I wake to a pitch-black room, not knowing how much time has passed. Dread fills me with the need to know what’s happening to Shay. Miles and Miguel will come to rescue us. I know they will unless something terrible has happened to them or worse yet, they're locked up here somewhere.

No, I can't think that way. I need to stay positive. They are out there fighting for a way to save us. Each of them knows this compound like the back of their hands. They know the best ways to get in and out, and I know I have to put every ounce of my trust in them, my brothers by choice.

Sitting back up on the bed, I poise myself to keep my eyes on the door and wait.

It feels like an eternity before I hear the turning of the knob and the door opening. In steps an older woman, one I’ve grown to love as she raised me as a child. Mama Saige.

She flips the switch on the wall, basking the room in light. Casting her tear-filled eyes on me, she makes her way across the room, placing the tray of food in her hands on the nightstand. Reaching out with her shaky, aged hand, she takes mine in hers, gripping tightly.

“Dear boy, I am so sorry,” she whispers softly to me.

“Mama Saige, have you seen her? My mate, is she okay?”

“No, son I haven’t. I’ve seen the other woman, the oracle. She is in bad shape. He’s barely feeding her, thinking she will cave to him. He has vile plans in store for…” she’s cut off by the gruff voice from the hallway.

“Hurry up, old woman. Don’t think Mr. Michaelson won’t notice you speaking to him.” He barrels through the doorway, grabs her by the arm, and drags her from the room. “He’s gonna have your head for this,” he growls out at her.

“I’m old. I’ve lived my life. Why do I care what he does to me?” she croaks out, agony tinged in her voice.
