“Fucking leave her alone, asshole. You’re dead when I get out of here. I have your face memorized. I’m going to fucking set your ass on fire and dance around your body as you go up in flames. Your burning flesh will be my new favorite scent.”

He tosses Mama Saige into the hallway, causing her to stumble and fall to the floor as he rushes back to me, pulling his gun from his pocket and hitting me across my temple, causing stars to erupt in my vision. His laughter rings in my ears as he marches back across the room, slamming the door behind him. Warm liquid runs down the side of my face, over my cheeks, and drips on my hand, a bright shade of red.

Hunter

We've got a plan. Thank fuck Tala could get us a spell; it wasn’t exactly what we wanted, but it would do. It’s not a teleportation spell so to say, but we can open a portal, one that will drop the people actually going into the compound into the woods. The others will be dropped in three locations around the perimeter, where the teams in those spots will launch a coordinated attack, drawing all the forces to them.

Now we wait. Sebastian's family will be here in two days. Two days until we can rescue our mate and bring her home. Not only her but her best friend and Shay’s final mate. My wolf is just as anxious as I am, and I need to run.

The house is quiet as I head down the stairs. It’s close to three in the morning. No doubt everyone is asleep. Stepping off the last step of the stairs, I catch a glimmer of light from underneath the closed door of Ryder’s office.

I almost change directions from heading outside to his office to check if he’s awake or not. My wolf, however, urges me towards the back door. Running is more important than consoling my brother. Shay’s kidnapping had hit him the hardest since she was with him.

Exiting the house, I make sure to shut the door quietly, not wanting to wake anyone. Rest was needed and more important to the rescue mission we were gearing up for. As I stroll across the backyard, I’m already pulling my shirt over my head and folding it up. By the time I get to the edge of the woods, I’m already pulling my feet from my sneakers as I place my shirt on top of them, then reach for my pants and begin undoing them.

Once I’m completely undressed, I call my wolf forward and allow the shift to take over and run. I run for an hour, never stopping, pushing my body to the brink before finally finding a large oak tree and collapsing underneath it. Choosing to stay in wolf form, I rest my head on my paws and drift off, allowing dreams to take me.

I’m human again, walking through woods familiar yet not at the same time. A bright light up ahead calls me towards it. The closer I get, the brighter it becomes, and the more overgrown the woods are. Pushing branches out of my path, I continue to move forward. I seem to walk forever, the light brighter but still out of reach until finally, I step into a clearing, the bright light in the dead center of it.

“Hunter, so good to see you, son,” comes from it, shocking me. The feminine voice is so familiar, but not if it’s even possible. What’s most miraculous is the light is speaking to me with no corporeal form.

“Who are you? What are you? How is this possible?”

“Oh dear boy, you always had so many questions. So inquisitive then and even now. As I told your sweet mate when I visited her, I am older than you could ever imagine. Time is of the essence and we don’t have much. You must hurry and save her and the others. The final battle is coming and you all need to be together to win. His very life hangs in the balance before he even has the chance to breathe.” Her riddled words leave me confused.

“Who is the ‘he’ you are talking about?” I ask just as I’m pulled backward by a force I cannot see and everything goes black.

My wolf wakes with a startle. Knowing we need to share this fucking weird ass dream, he takes off at a sprint back to the house, hoping someone can make sense of what she said.

Making it back to my clothes, I quickly dress, picking my shoes up from the ground and running straight to the back door. I fumble with the handle before opening the door and stepping inside. The smell of brewing coffee and bacon hits my senses as I step inside the kitchen. Sebastian and Damien are working as a cohesive unit as they make breakfast, while Tala and the M&M twins sit at the table, heckling them over burned toast.

“Where’s Ryder?” I ask, panting, trying to catch my breath, winded from the run to get back here.

“Still in his office. We knocked on the door, but he growled at us. Not wanting to lose a finger to the rabid dog, we came in here to watch the comedy cooking show,” Miles eagerly announces as he stands and heads to the coffee pot.

“Well, I’m getting him. I just had the weirdest dream and I need to tell y’all about it. Remember that woman that visited Shay that time after we brought her home when she passed out? Well, I think she just visited me too with her cryptic ass self.” I’m already out of the kitchen and headed to his office before they even have a chance to question what I’ve said.

His office door is still closed; lifting my hand, I ball up my fist and begin pounding on it. “In the kitchen now!” I bellow out before heading back to spill what just happened to me.

I’ve only made it a couple of feet before his office door is slung open behind me, a very pissed-off Alpha wolf standing in it.

“Fucking hell, Hunter. What the fuck is wrong with you? I’m trying to finalize shit and you’re playing goddamn games.”

“I’d shut the hell up right now. You may be the Alpha, but I’m not your punching bag. If you would have listened instead of coming at me half-cocked, you would have heard I got shit to share. Come listen or don’t, it’s up to you, asshole.” I finish berating him, turn and storm off to the kitchen to people who want to hear what I’ve fucking got to say.

Stepping back into the room, I see Tala has taken over, no doubt not wanting to die from whatever Seb and Damien were trying to cook.

“What’s the story you’re chomping at the bit to tell us?” Damien asks first.

Taking a breath, I kick into story mode.

“So I went for a run really early this morning. I ran hard for about an hour, then laid down and fell asleep. That’s where shit got weird. Remember how Shay told us she was visited by that woman when she was out cold?” Each of them nod their heads in unison, even Ryder who had stepped into the kitchen. “Well, I think she visited me too, staying in this eerie yet calming body of light. I could hear her talking. She said we needed to get them out of there. She even acted like she knew me as a kid, and that was the oddest fucking thing. She said we didn’t have much time. More specifically, it was imperative we hurried up.”

“Did you recognize the voice?” Sebastian asks, wrapping his arm around Damien, and pulling him closer to his body.

“No, not at all. It was familiar somehow, but what was weird is she said the final battle was coming and that we needed to be together and that his life hung in the balance. But that was it before it felt like invisible hands grabbed me, yanking me backward. Then I woke up.”

“Who the fuck is he, and who were you talking to? Can we even trust it?” Ryder, always the logical one and needing to know all the details, asks.
