Dropping my phone in the console, I shift the truck into gear and head home.

Five pack members came and expressed their desire to leave. Good riddance. Three of them were older which hurt me as it will be hard for them to find a pack to take them in. Most wolves only want to increase their numbers by adding power, and the feeble wolves could barely shift these days. Craig, I was expecting, his brother I was not. They were strong and once I thought close friends, but you never know the bigotry someone holds until you are faced with it.

But now, I’m waiting for our warriors who are going with us. We need to prepare them for the battle to come and the stakes it brings with it- possible death. We’re standing on the porch, our gaze roaming over the road that leads to our house. Our weapons are all neatly placed on the patio table. We’re ready for this fight, our minds are clear, and we’re ready to get our people back.

We had gone over earlier and saw Chelle, but didn’t tell her what we were doing. She was missing her mom and Aunt Beba so much we didn’t want to get her hopes up just in case something happened and our mission failed. Janey promised she would keep her close and watch over her. Each of us gave her a kiss and three extra for the people missing from her life at the moment. Now we had our game faces on and were ready.

Headlights appear down the road. A trail of them headed right for us. Pulling into the driveway behind our cars, they make dual parallel lines until the driveway got full, and they pulled to the side of the road in a single line. From around the house, no doubt hearing the commotion, came Sebastian's parents and the vampires they brought, witches from surrounding covens that Tala contacted, and fae that Damien’s parents were able to get here, knowing they would not arrive in time for tonight's mission. For the pending battle, they would be here, eager to stand beside their new daughter-in-law and fight.

The wolves gathered to the side until Chad moved across the divide and began shaking the hands of the other supernaturals there, erupting into a chain effect that had the others following behind him. A sigh of relief escapes from all of us.

Stepping forward to the edge of the porch, I bring my fingers to my lips and let out a piercing whistle. Everyone’s heads snap to face me in an instant with their game faces on. They each know the importance of this mission. I don’t need to speak any more about it.

“Okay men, ladies, first we,” I say gesturing back towards Hunter, Seb, and D before continuing, “want to thank each and every one of you that have come to help us get not only our mate but her other bonded mate and her best friend back. Much to our disbelief, our bond was destined by the fates and long ago foretold in a prophecy. You see, our beautiful mate is not only a very powerful witch, but she will also bring down an evil that’s threatening to end all supernatural beings as we know. He’s consumed with power and control. Evil to the bone. We must put aside all our differences and work together so that good can prevail.”

The crowd erupts in a bunch of, “Hell yeah!” and “Fuck evil tyrants!”

“The plan is simple. Thanks to Tala, we have the ability to transport from here to there through a portal. Three groups of mixed supernaturals will be flanked around the perimeter of the compound. You are our defense and distraction. You will draw attention to you while three smaller groups will transport into the woods behind the home and sneak inside. Each group will seek out and find a different person we are after. In and out is what we want. This is not the time for the final battle. It will come though, so be prepared. Once we have our people, the portals will open. Get them and come home. We want the final fight to be on our turf.

Now, for the teams going inside. I am with Kael, Damien, and Nela. We will go after Shay. Hunter will be with Miguel, Nolan, and Jael for Maverick. And finally, Miles, Seb, Jack, and Landry, you will be the final group to go for Beba. Again, this is in and out. We are to be discreet; the entire goal is not to be caught. The rest of you already know where you will head and who is in charge of those areas. May the fates and gods protect us all on our mission. Grab your weapons and head to the backyard. It’s time to head out.”

We each take our weapons, strapping them to our bodies, and step off the porch. In a unified group, we head to the backyard where we will cast the portals, four of them, to be exact. The four mages will travel with us, linked together, to know when to cast the return portals.

Just hold on Shay, Mav, and Beba. We are coming for you.

Chapter 10

Hunter

Steppingfromtheportalinto the Ozak woods, I stumble slightly before catching my balance. Godfrey, our portal mage, had warned me it could happen, but it still caught me off guard. Apparently, it did the same to the others, as they needed a few minutes to catch their bearings as well. Looking over my shoulder, I see a smirk on Godfrey’s face and know he’s fighting back laughter.

“Godfrey, is everyone in position?” He holds up his finger to me, as his eyes turn white and he stands completely still. He stays like that for a couple of minutes before his eyes return to normal and he’s doubled over laughing. Fucking prick.

After catching his breath, he blurts out, “Yeah they are all in place. Some might need a few minutes. They’re busy puking.”

“You’re such a comedian.” I roll my eyes as I speak. “Okay guys, in and out. Find our target and get out. Best-case scenario, you find the one you’re not looking for, and still get out. Just let us know if that happens. Miles gave us a general idea of where he thinks they may be and the floor plans of the home. Stay alert and stay alive.” They all respond with a head nod. Time is of the essence; we know it won’t take long for them to realize the ones out front are just a distraction.

Miles and Miguel make their way over to me. “Ready to get in place, Hunter. We’re about a hundred yards from the edge of the woodline. We want to be there when they begin the attack.” Turning, they begin to trudge through the woods, the rest of us falling in line behind them since they know the way.

We stay quiet, not knowing if someone is patrolling the perimeter. Once we get in the position we need to be, we all squat down and I take this time to go over the final plan.

“So, Miles gave us possible places they could be held. He’s pretty confident that Beba may be kept in the basement dungeon. Shay and Mav are probably in the west wing on either the second or third floor, as no one is allowed in that wing but family. Let’s stay focused, stay alert, and get our people back.” I’ve barely got the words out of my mouth when we hear the blasts from our people at the front starting their attack.

Hordes of soldiers go running for the main gate, but we wait, needing the perfect moment to head for the house. Blasts of lights emerge from the other side of the compound. “We go on three. One…two…three…” We take off in a sprint.

Shifting into my wolf would get me there quicker, but I know a wolf would draw more attention than a man. We make it to the door without running into anyone surprisingly.Have we been set up? Is there an army waiting inside to take us down as we enter?

I try to turn the door handle, but it’s locked.

“I got it,” Miles announces, stepping forward and zapping the knob with his magic, obliterating it.

“Thanks,” rolls off my tongue as I poise my gun, ready for an attack as I push the door open.

We all step inside. “Okay, Seb. Jack. Landry. You’re with me; the basement is this way.” Miles points down the hallway to the left. “The rest of you, the west wing is that way. About halfway down the hall, you’ll see a door with a fireball engraved into it. Take that, and it will lead you to the stairs that go to the west wing. Hugo is probably guarding Shay, and he’s a fucking asshole. He’ll be ready for a fight and won’t give up. He’s loyal to a fault to Mr. Michaelson.”

Seb gives one last look at us before saying, “Get our girl.” The words hold so much agony, as he’s not going to be in the same area as us. I know it’s killing him.
