“Okay, so we move slowly and expect to encounter enemies along the way.” I head down the hallway, gun and blade pulled, always ready.

We make it to the end of the hallway, stopping just before the end. Creeping up to it slowly, I stick my head around just enough to take a quick look. Three soldiers stand in a cluster about midway down. I quickly pull back, praying they didn’t catch a glimpse of me.

Their voices raise and I know they saw me when they shoot a burst of fire down the hallway, just as I move my head back. “Get ready guys!”

Pulling my dagger, I turn quickly and fling it towards the men, hitting the one in the middle right between the eyes, and he falls to the ground. Blood pools from the wound as his lifeless eyes gaze at nothing. Landry sprints past me as he runs toward the guards. Miles has a ball of fire already formed in his hands, laughing maniacally before shooting it toward the two remaining men. Landry tackles his guy, knocking him out of the way of the blast of fire as he punches him in the face.

The other guard was not so lucky, the fire blast grazing the side of his body setting him on fire. His screams are haunting as he frantically pats his body down, trying to knock the flames off. Lifting my gun I aim at his unsuspecting form and fire, hitting him right in the heart.

Landry is still beating the shit out of the other, his body a bloody heap as Miles and Jack look on. Walking over to the man on the floor, I step on his head with my boot as I reach down and pull my blade from his skull.

“Landry, finish him off. Jack, check these two for keys and take any weapons on them. We need to find Beba and get the fuck out of here.” I step over the bodies and head down the hallway cautiously, staying alert for any more surprises.

I stop at the first door I come in contact with and open it with caution. There’s a metal block in the center with restraints bolted into it, for arms and legs I presume. Blades, whips, paddles, and various other items hang from the wall, while a table holds knives of various sizes, pliers, and mallets. Blood stains tinge the floor and my stomach wants to revolt because they could have brought either Shay or Beba to this room. Thankfully, at the moment it’s empty. Turning I see the others peeking in the door, taking in the sight before them,

“She’s not here, let’s keep going.”

On and on we go, each room empty and I begin to fear they’ve moved her. Was Hunter’s information wrong?

We turn the corner where the last room is situated and rush forward, checking the door but it’s locked. We fumble through the keys we found on the three men, trying each until we find one that works and the door flies open. The room holds no bed or furniture, simply a mat on the floor that has a female curled up in a ball lying on top of it. There's a metal cuff attached to her leg with a chain that runs to a bolt on the floor.

Tossing the keys to Jack, “Go through these until you find the one that unlocks her chains.”

Landry kneels down at her head. Her hair covers her face as she collapses in on herself. He pushes her hair back to expose a face covered in bruises and dried-up blood. Glancing down her body, I see her exposed skin showing much of the same.

“Beba. Please, baby, wake up,” he pleads with her until her eyes begin to flutter.

“Landry,” she breathes out weakly.

Jack continues to fumble through the keys until he finds the right one. Miles steps up beside Landry, his fist clenched as he looks at her. “I got her,” he says as he bends down to scoop her up in his arms,

“No, I’ll carry her. We may need your hands free to use your magic on the way out of here.” Miles pauses at Landry’s words, his mouth opening to protest.

“He’s right Miles. We need your magic.”

“Fine,” he finally relents as Landry scoops her up in his arms, standing slowly trying not to jostle her too much when she cries out in pain. Turning we head out of the room. Our goal now is to make it back to the rendezvous point where we hope to meet the others.

Please god let Shay be with them and that she is okay.

Chapter 12

Ryder

HearingfromHunterthathe found Maverick was a plus; it meant we were heading in the right direction. Even better, it saved us some time now that we have confirmation on which floor she was on. We knew Maverick’s dick of a father would have his most fierce right-hand man guarding her, so we needed to be ready to fight. I stop on the stairwell, turning to face the others. “If the bastard is up there, he’s mine. The three of you are to get Shay out of the room and back to the woods. She’s the most important thing no matter what.” Turning so I’m looking Damien right in the eyes, I continue, making a pact so to say between the two of us. “Damien, promise no matter what, you get her to safety, whether I make it out of here or not.”

“You have my word. But just for the record, we’re all making it out of here.”

“Okay. Let’s go,” I command as I head up the remaining stairs until we come to the door at the top. Behind this barrier somewhere is my woman, my other half. My hope of opening the door quietly is shot to shit when it begins to squeak. “Fuck it, they know we’re here now, let’s go,” I holler out as I take off down the hallway, a large mountain of a man sneering at us from the other end.

“Oh, if it isn’t the big bad wolf. Have you come to blow the house down?” he calls out mockingly.

“Oh, I’m going to do more than that warlock. But I’m getting my mate first.” Before he even has a chance to react I’m charging him, as Kael shoots balls of fire at him, drawing his attention.

I hit him in the gut with my shoulder knocking him backward onto the floor, just as he lets off a burst of fire that flies right by me, straight toward Kael. Pulling back my arm, balling my hand in a fist, I begin to punch his face, unsure if Kael took the brunt of the blast or if he was able to dodge it.

I hear the pounding of feet on the hardwood floor and hope like hell it’s the guys rushing toward the room the brute was guarding, and not more of Mr. Michaelson’s men come to join the fray.

“She’s in here!” I hear called out in a deep voice, but when I turn towards the sound of the voice, it gives Hugo the upper hand. He flips me on my back, wrapping his hands around my neck, and squeezes tightly.
