“Oh, okay. I’m happy for her.”

“Now, don’t ever think that again. From the moment I laid eyes on you before I knew you were my mate, I knew you’d be the last woman I would ever love. Now let’s get to practice. You have a magic session with Tala in just a couple of hours and we need to do some more work on your punches.”

“Can I have breakfast first?” I say coyly.

“You must remember your emotions are closely linked with your powers. What the true extent of them will be, we’re still unclear about,” Tala’s explaining as she pulls various types of herbs from a bag.

“What are those for?” For some crazy reason, I feared she was going to brew up something nasty with them for me to drink.

“Back up ingredients for the ward spell. Now I need you to work on clearing your mind and drawing your power to the force you want when you need it. Without control of your magic, you’ll be useless in a battle with it, and with what's coming, we’re going to need you at a hundred percent and fighting alongside us.” She gives me a stern look and I feel like a child being reprimanded by a school teacher for not working at their fullest potential.

“Do you think I’ll ever master my magic? I know I can call fire pretty well now. My aim when I cast it out isn’t stellar, but I plan to work more on it tonight. Sebastian is going to set me up with some targets in the backyard and have some of the witches on hand who have fire and earth magic. He’d joked about not wanting me to set the house or woods on fire, that he was partial to the memories they held.”

“Yes dear, I think you can. You just need to clear your mind and believe. What’s your biggest hindrance? Your self-doubt. You’re a magical being, and once your confidence comes, your full power will be available to you with no mishaps of setting something on fire. So let's just sit, breathe and focus, clearing our mind of everything that clogs it.” As she goes to sit down on one of the two yoga mats she’d placed on the floor I copy her, doing the same.

Once I’m down I mimic her, crossing my legs, sitting up tall, touching my middle finger to my thumb, and placing one of my hands on each of my thighs, palms up. Tala gives me a smile and a nod of approval as she closes her eyes. So I follow suit.

“Now breathe in and out nice and slow, allowing all your stress and worries to leave your body with the exhale. Focus on your magic, feel it taking over your body, succumbing to your wishes.” Tala becomes quiet as I sit, focusing on doing what she instructed.

It was hard at first, my mind kept trailing to the news Maverick had given about his father coming, then I would panic and have to start over with the breathing. This went on repeat until I think I had thought of everything that had been weighing on my soul.

Finally, I feel blank and I focus. Breathing deeply in and blowing slowly out. Embracing who I am and the magic I have. Warmth begins to surround me, a familiar feeling of my fire magic, giving me the comfort and reassurance I need. But what I didn’t expect was her gasp.

Opening my eyes, I find myself not on the floor on my yoga mat, but on the coffee table across the room. What the fucking hell?!

“Tala, how did I get over here?” My eyes blink rapidly as I reach up, tugging on my earlobe.

“My dear, it appears a new power has emerged. It means you did well on focusing your mind. You can now teleport. We’ll need to hone it so that we can increase the speed, distance, and amount of times you can do it. A wonderful power to have, and extremely rare for a witch. Normally, it’s only seen in warlocks and then only in a handful; most require a teleportation spell to create a portal,” Tala boasts proudly.

“Then why do I have it? I’m just a witch, a new one at that,” I say, needing affirmation from her that this power is truly one I should have.

“Because the fates wanted you to. If you have it, it's meant to be. The fates never make a mistake. That must be why you have so many mates. The prophecy foretold you to be very powerful. Now, let's work on this new skill you have. Focus and teleport your ass back over here to me,” she demands with a wide grin as she cackles.

“Prepare to be here for a while because I don’t know how I did it the first time.”

She just shakes her head at me before snapping her fingers for me to get started. Three long hours later I had become more confident in my ability to teleport. Well, just from the table to the mat, but I could do it.

Chapter 19

Damien

“Maybeweshouldtalkto Tala. She’s pushing Shay to the brink of exhaustion with her training sessions. Did you see the way she dragged herself up the stairs just a few minutes ago? She needs to rest, not more practice,” I fume to the guys, pissed. All she did was throw her hand up in a wave as she passed by us.

“She’s not working her any harder than I am. But I’ll go check on her and if she’s that tired, we’ll skip sparring in the morning.” Hunter moves to the kitchen counter as he talks and begins placing food on a plate.

“Hunter, man, you’ve had two plates already filled to the rim and you’re still hungry.” Ryder chastises his brother from where he’s seated at the front of the table.

“Cute, real cute. This is for Shay. she walked by and didn’t stop to eat. She hasn’t had anything since lunch,” Hunter barks back at his brother, his voice holding a slight hint of annoyance at his brother's words.

Hunter places the plate of food on a tray, then opens the refrigerator to pull out a bottle of water. “I’ll see you assholes later. I’m gonna go take care of our girl.” Picking up the tray, he walks out of the room, leaving us all in awkward silence. None of us other than him thought to take care of our girl and make sure she eats. We’re fucking idiots and terrible mates!

A soft pattering of feet catches our attention as we all look up to see Tala enter the room. Her face is solemn. “Your mate is already showing how powerful she will be, her strength grew today with the unlocking of new magic. One not seen in a witch in thousands of years.” Our jaws all drop at her words. Awe flooding us at how amazing our mate is.

“What is it?” Maverick’s the first to ask.

“She can teleport,” her words slow as she mutters,

“Cool! So she can open a portal. That'll be helpful.” I can already imagine her taking me with her somewhere. What a ride that’ll be. Spur of the moment vacations and not needing to pay airfare. she just opens a portal for all of us to step through.
