“Oh sweet child, people. Sadly, you will lose someone very special to you in order for the pathway to harmony to be fulfilled. If this loss doesn’t happen, the dark one will win and even more losses will happen. But now it’s time for you to go. To get ready for the battle. Just remember, for good to come out victorious, you will experience a great loss.” I begin to become drowsy, feeling my body fall backward as darkness engulfs me, fading into silence.

Waking, I see the morning light shining through the curtains. Memories of my dream come rushing to the forefront of my mind. We can win but only with the loss of someone close to me. Who could it be? Is it my parents? Please, not my daughter.

Slowly I sit up, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed, letting my toes run back and forth through the plush carpet. I fell in love with it the first time I stepped on it, feeling like I was walking on a cloud.

As I sat there, letting my feet eat up the comfort of the carpet, I debated. Should I tell the guys about my dream or keep it to myself? In the end, keeping it to myself won out. I knew they would take it as meaning some type of sacrifice from them and I wouldn’t let them do it without knowing for sure what her cryptic message meant.

A light rap on the door, followed by joyful giggles draws my attention. Standing up I head over, flipping the lock on the door and opening it. My beautiful daughter stands there, waiting with the biggest, cheesiest grin on her face.

“Mommy, can I go to Mandy’s today? Her cousins are going to be there.” She clasps her hands together, bringing them up to her chin as she mouths, ‘please’ to me over and over.

“Let me think.” I put my finger to my chin and begin to tap on it as I feign thinking. “Have you cleaned your room?”

“Yes!” she shouts out in excitement.

“Made your bed, and put your dirty clothes in the laundry room?”

“Yes, Mommy. Can I pleassee?” she begs so sweetly.

“Then yes, I guess you can. But I need to talk to her mommy and make sure it’s okay.”

“Okay, she’s downstairs. I’ll go tell her to come up.” She turns, beginning to run down the hallway before I call out, stopping her dead in her tracks as she turns back to see what I want.

“She’s downstairs, right now?”

“Yes,” rolling her eyes as she says it.

“Crap, okay. Let me get dressed and I’ll be right down.” Turning I shut the door and frantically rush around the room getting clothes to change into, before heading downstairs, curious as to what she’s doing here. Normally she just calls or texts to see if Chelle can come over, never just showing up.

Once I finally make it downstairs, I hear muffled voices and a mixture of feminine and male laughter coming from the living room and decide to head there first.

Stepping through the door Janey sees me first and pushes off the couch she’d had her hip propped up against as she slaps Hunter across the arm. “Shay, how have you been? I’ve wanted to pop in and say hello since you got back but didn’t want to overwhelm you.”

“Oh, I’m fine. Chelle informs me you’re wanting to know if she can come over and play with Mandy.”

“Yeah, I heard they had such a ball at the picnic with the blowup slides and bouncy houses. We rented some for the backyard and my nieces and nephews are coming over and we’re doing a big cookout.”

“That sounds amazing. Of course, if you want her to come she is welcome too. I can pick her up when she’s done if you need me to,” I offer.

“It’s no problem to bring her back. It’ll be later this evening, maybe around six if that's okay?” She gives a thumbs-up signal, causing me to look behind to see two girls huddled together with shocked expressions on their faces at being caught.

“Come give me a kiss and I’ll see you later.” She bounds forward into my arms, wrapping her arms around my waist.

“Thank you, Mommy.”

“See you later Shay, Hunter. Come on girls, let's bust this popsicle stand,” she calls out to them as they head out of the house.

Once she’s shut the door and I hear her leave, I turn to Hunter, who’s looking at me curiously.

“What’s running through that beautiful mind of yours? I can see the gears turning.”

“It’s stupid, really. I really like Janey and she’s always been nice. It’s just… I’m embarrassed to even say it.” I’m procrastinating, admitting what I’m really thinking for fear of what he’ll say. That he may in fact confirm my suspicions.

“Spit it out, babe.” He takes ahold of my hands, pulling me closer to him, as he backs up until he can rest against the couch, holding me close.

Looking up into his eyes, I confess what I was thinking. “It’s just when I came in, you two were so close and she was touching you so casually. It just felt like there may have been or is something between the two of you. I know we’re mates and how we feel about each other. My insecurities are just at an all-time high right now.” The one thing I didn’t expect to happen, happens. The fucker starts laughing. I bared my soul, and he finds it amusing.

“Baby, first we’ve been friends since we were children. Second, I'm not her type. She likes guys, but women are more her speed. She’s actually dating another female from the pack. It’s not a commonly known thing but now with how our relationship has unfolded, she’s gotten the nerve to go public.” A weight is lifted off my chest at his words, but also anger. She felt she had to hide who she was because she thought it wouldn’t be accepted. Most of all my anxiety that I’d have to lose a friend I was just gaining is gone.
