“You’re too late. He’s here. The lot of you are as good as dead and then they’re his and all your kind will be wiped clean from this world.” Her words are labored, with the pressure on her chest, but she still manages to spew her vile words.

I’m done with her, baring my fangs, I smile broadly before sinking them into her neck. The taste of her blood is so terrible I want to puke, but I drain her still, suffering through the agony.

Turning back to the sounds of the battle going on around me, I see their numbers have grown, either more teleported in or they’ve broken through the perimeter. Scanning the mass of people and shifters around me, it appears that one, or both, has happened as I see more and more of the pack of wolves engaged in battle.

I hear a scream from behind me that pierces my ears, turning in time to see Miles, hands to the temples of a woman behind me with Shay at his side. She looks worn out and I can tell all the teleporting is draining her. She’s not going to be able to keep up at this pace.

Miles drops the lifeless woman to the ground, then turns to Shay. “Let’s go.” He reaches out, placing his hand on her arm.

“No, she’s fucking exhausted. She’s done teleporting for now. You can do like the rest of us and use those two things attached to your trunk called legs.” He grimaces at me, but when he casts his eyes on Shay, he can see how worn down she is and takes off running into the midst of the fight.

“Shay, find somewhere to hide and rest.”

“No, I can't, I need to fight,” she replies in a weak voice.

“Shay, rest now. Find somewhere safe, and hide. Take five minutes.” It comes out more as an order and I see the minute it pisses her off as she glares at me before disappearing right before me.

That woman is going to be the death of me. No time to dwell on it now. I need to get back to the fight.

Shay

How dare he. I know he loves me and is only trying to help, but there’s no way in hell I’m going to hide and take a break while all these people are here fighting for my and Chelle’s safety.

I pull my strength and teleport myself to the other side of the field. In the second it takes me to catch my bearings, I’m left vulnerable to an attack, and I’m knocked to the ground by a blast of wind. Not knowing for sure where it came from, I just start shooting blasts of fire out, praying I don’t hit anyone on our side. It buys me the time I need to get back up onto my feet.

Come on Shay, get your head in the game.

I go to shoot a ball of fire at the witch headed my way, but for some reason, I can’t get it to form. Shock, fatigue. I'm not sure what the issue is, but I charge her, knowing I’m going to have to take her in a hand to hand fight.

She throws a punch that hits me across the left side of my face, knocking me sideways, and leaving me open for her next move. She reaches out, snaking her hands in my hair, yanking me back as she begins pulling me away. I dig my feet into the ground, trying to gain some traction to keep her from moving forward.

“Keep fighting bitch. I just won myself some bonus points with the boss capturing you.”

No, no, no!

There’s no fucking way he’s taking me back. I manage to turn my body, fighting through the pain that comes from the way she’s pulling my hair, grabbing her shoulders and pulling her back, throwing her off balance as we both fall to the ground.

I manage to break her grip on my hair, losing some in the process as I crawl on top of her, straddling her as I begin to punch her over and over in the face, making sure to keep my hands fisted just like Hunter showed me.

I keep punching until she throws her hands up to stop me, tossing me off of her. Landing on my back, it knocks the air out of me for a moment and she gets the upper hand with a sinister gleam in her eyes.

“He wants you alive, but that doesn’t mean I can’t fuck up that pretty face of yours.”

Catching a glint of the rock lying just to my left, I reach out, trying not to alert her to my movement as she continues to berate me. I’m so focused on what I’m doing, I tune out her words, steadily reaching for the rock, even when her fist hits me across my left jaw. A force so powerful I swear she’s broken a bone.

Just a little further. Yes! Got it. Gripping the rock in my hand, I swing it back hard and hit her across the head, knocking her off of me. Rolling over quickly, keeping a grip on the rock, I begin to pound it against her head until she’s no longer moving. I don’t take the time to see if she’s dead or if I’ve just knocked her out. Instead, I’m jumping up from the ground and stumbling off as fast as I can.

Looking out at the battle ensuing I start to have an overwhelming sense of dread that we are going to lose. The more we take down, the more that appears. Maverick had mentioned he had a large number of supporters loyal to him. I just didn’t realize he had this many.

I call upon my magic again and begin to fire off magic. There's a small glow, then nothing. Putting out my hands, I call again, with success, and fire at the outlying witches, trying to pick them off one by one.

Then I see him. The one I hoped never to see again. He’s standing off to the side with a smile spread across his face as he watches his forces take the lead. His henchman Hugo standing right beside him. His faithful guard dog.

It’s almost as if he knows I’m staring at him, as he turns his head, locking his eyes on mine. He leans into Hugo, saying something that sends them both into a fit of laughter as he moves toward me. There’s no fear in his eyes. He moves so smoothly, with no fear of being hit by any blast or attacked. I thought he was going to flinch, or at the very least, Hugo was going to jump in and protect him when a fireball came flying at him from Miguel, only to fizzle out.

No wonder he isn’t fucking hurrying. He has a protective barrier around him. Miguel continues to blast fireball after fireball for them only to fizzle out. I know he’s trying to save me but he needs to tell someone they’re here.

He keeps stalking across the field, headed for me. This is it. Now is when he plans to take me. I can run or stand and fight. First, I need to tell someone he’s here since Miguel is frantically trying to stop him from where he’s at. He’s so focused on it that he doesn’t see the warlock coming up behind him until he’s knocked him to the ground with a blast of wind. Miguel quickly recovers, shooting a blast of fire at him, giving him the upper hand to take him down.
