Turning her head over her shoulder, she looks back to Mr. Michaelson, who’s busy chanting, trying to break through her barrier.

“You’ll never get out. I’ll be back for you, though. It’s time I put an end to this. No more people fighting for me need to die.”

She walks, no, she glides across the ground on air until she’s in the middle of the field and everything goes silent as they’re frozen in place.

“Now that I have your attention,” she announces as she frees all those fighting for us and they hurriedly move from their position and group together, in awe and shock at what’s happening before them.

“You two, who are you here for? Speak now and truthfully,” she commands.

“We are here for you and our mate. We’ve come to help you, then to stake our claim on Tala. We’ve searched for her for thousands of years and tonight we felt her and came without hesitation,” the tallest one with the long blonde hair announces.

The look on Tala’s face confuses me. It’s not one of shock but of knowing. Like she knew she had mates that were looking for her. Something else to add to that list of shit she needs to explain. Shay frees them and they rush to Tala’s side, as she steps away from them.

“Now, the rest of you, this is your final chance. Who is here because they follow him willingly or because they were forced out of fear? Speak truthfully. I will know.” She scans through the crowd, her face tight and stern, her coldness scaring me.

A few scream out that they’re only here out of fear and beg for forgiveness, knowing the power she carries inside of her now is far greater than any they have ever seen before. Others, however, sneer at her.

It only takes her a moment as she scans the mass of witches before her. The few who begged forgiveness drop limply to the ground as the others light up in flames, their screams echoing across the vastness of the field.

“Those who are left, leave, never come back. Just know your freedom is not a representation of my weakness. Come for my family again and you're dead. A slow, painful one. Now go.” She releases them and they scurry away. Leaving only our people, Mr. Michaelson, and Hugo, who is still encapsulated within the tornado wind.

She turns back to the last of our enemies. “Now for the two of you.”

Chapter 24

Maverick

Shemovesacrossthefield to the tornado winds holding Hugo, rolling her wrist and flicking her hand. The tornado disappears leaving him frozen in place. He struggles to move, but nothing. I run to her side, the need to be by her strong,

“Your strength will be amazing for our coven,” Hugo spews. Does he not see that he’s lost?

“I will never be a part of your coven. Just like I know you will always support him. Eager to do his bidding, no matter the cost to anyone else. I would’ve given you the chance to be stripped of your magic and walk away swearing to never come back, but you took something special from me. Someone I love. Whether you did it yourself or he did, it doesn’t matter. You still have to die.” She waves her hand and a branch appears in it. “But unlike him, you get the pleasure of seeing this coming straight for your heart.” She uses her magic sending it spiraling forward and it pierces his chest, going completely through him.

He stands there in shock, a gaping hole where his heart used to be before he drops to the ground in a pool of blood. Then her words hit me. Who died?

She turns to my father and removes the barrier, moving closer to him as vines rise from the ground and begin to wrap around his wrist and ankles, holding him in place,

I reach out, grab her by the shoulders, and turn her to me. “Shay, look at me, baby. Who’s dead?”

She says one word and I feel not only her pain but everyone as they listen. “Hunter.”

“The wolf deserved a far worse death than he got. I knew once you came into power darkness would take over you and you’d make the perfect mate for me, for my son. Well, until he became a fucking pansy-ass bitch. Just let me go and I’ll help you master your powers even more. I’ll teach you all the dark magic you could ever want to know. Together we can rule this world.”

“Fuck you, Dad! Just calling you by that name makes my stomach roll. She could never be dark. She is light, loving, and beautiful, with a heart of gold. One that could never be corrupted.” The fucker just laughs at my words.

“You don’t get the chance to live. You’re pure evil, the devil incarnate, and will never stop. As long as you are alive, my daughter will never be safe from you. You need to die. To pay for your crimes.” She slowly moves towards him as she speaks.

“Oh my dear, but what about yours? How many lives have you taken tonight? Shouldn’t you pay for those? How about Maverick or the others fighting alongside you? Are they going to pay?” He tries to make her feel guilty over her actions.

“I will live every day of my life knowing what I did, but also know that you forced me to do every bit of it. Bowing to you, turning myself over would result in the loss of so many other lives if the prophecy were to come true with you being victorious. So to me, my wrongdoing is outweighed in the end.” Her voice is calm and unfaltering as she speaks.

“She won’t have to live with your death. That will be by my hands.” Stepping up to Shay, putting my arm around her shoulder, I pull her into my side, trying to give her all the comfort I can.

She turns her head, for the first time looking me in my eyes, and I can see the pain within hers. “No! You will not be responsible for your father’s death. No matter how cruel he is, he is still your father.”

Before anything else can be said a sparkling white light appears. So bright and intense that I have to squint my eyes and put my hands up to block it from blinding me until it dissipates and an older woman is standing there before me.

“It’s you!” a shocked Shay exclaims. “You’re here and not in my dreams.”
