“I’ve got you,” he said.

“OhGod,itfeelsso good to get out and breathe,” I said, as we shuffled into the little booth at the back of the jazz bar. Low lighting, old booths with leather soft like a pair of worn slippers, and smoke curling against the ceiling creating an artificial sky—this wasn’t my usual kind of hangout.

Which was exactly why I liked it.

Sometimes, a girl just had to let her hair down.

“I told you. A couple of glasses of wine, and you’ll feel like your old self again.”

I laughed. “Tamara would tell me yoga is the answer. And kombucha. But, honestly, the stuff tastes like crap. I don’t care how good it is for me.”

Jess giggled and pulled her frizzy hair into a thick ponytail at the base of her neck. Her strawberry-blonde hair appeared pink under the colored lights of the bar.

Danny, the server who always took care of our booth, brought a bottle of wine—the kind with a screw top rather than a cork—and two glasses.

“Half-price night, ladies! Timing is everything.”

“Why do you think we’re drinking on a Wednesday?” Jess asked, winking at Danny.

“Nothing tastes better than a bargain.”

When she grinned at Danny, the constellation of freckles on her nose shifted, and Danny looked at her like I didn’t exist.

“Call me if you need anything,” he said and walked away.
