“We’ll start there, then,” Sam said.
I stepped back and watched them show Arden how to modulate her powers. At first, her movements were awkward—at the early stages of using an element, you had to put more motion behind it. But she picked up on it soon, picking up handfuls of dirt, then rocks, then uprooting plants.
“You’re a quick study,” Wes said, walking behind Arden. The way he looked her up and down was clinical, but it pissed me off nonetheless. “But it gets harder from here. More taxing.”
Arden squared her shoulders. “I’m ready for it.”
“Your ability over rocks is impressive so far,” Wes said, glancing at Powell and Sam. “We can focus there first.”
Powell and Sam stepped back, but Wes got closer to Arden. I bit back my annoyance, crossing my arms over my chest. I glared at Wes, whose upbeat expression faltered for a second. He still stayed close to Arden, though.
Wes demonstrated how to pull rocks from underground, which took a lot more magic than what they’d been doing. Arden’s brows furrowed as she tried. Dirt shot up in a plume, drifting through the air. I created a breeze to blow it out of everyone’s faces.
“Can’t I just move the dirt around the rock, then get the rock?” Arden waved her hands, some dirt parting as if she’d used her hands.
“No, we have to focus on trying to get the rock. The rocks might be under something you can’t move aside.” Wes went behind her again and gripped her biceps. “Here, let me help.”
If he’d kept her at arm’s length, I would have been less pissed. But he was inches behind her, his breath ruffling her hair. I wasn’t having that. I shoved Wes back with a harsh breeze, growling. He fell on his ass and stared up at me, eyes wide. His skin paled as I stood over him.
“Don’t touch her,” I hissed.
“Lex.” Arden put her hand to my chest and pushed me backward. “Don’t. I can’t learn the movements without them touching me. And if I can’t learn the movements, I can’t control my magic.”
“Fine.” I turned and narrowed my eyes at Wes, then at the other two soldiers. “Don’t touch her more than is absolutely necessary. I swear that if you do, I will kill you without a second thought.”
“Understood, Your Highness,” Wes said as a bead of sweat slid from his brow.
I grunted in response.
Arden stood inches away from me now, looking up into my eyes. The adrenaline rush from my protective impulse still simmered, converting to lust. How did she do this to me with a single look? I pulled her closer until she was flush against me, making her squeak in surprise. She glanced down at the growing bulge in the front of my jeans and smiled.
“What, you get off on protecting me?” she asked, running her hands up my chest.
Apparently, I did.
“You three are dismissed,” I said to my soldiers. “We’ll pick this up again later. I’ll take over from here.”
The three saluted and left, disappearing through the cloaking spell.
“Now that we’re alone, what kind of lessons did you have in mind?” Arden asked, hopping up and wrapping her legs around me. I held her up with my hands on her ass.
