She’d seen the look in Wesley’s eyes. The hurt and pain of not having something he’d wanted.

“Do you want to share that subject?”

“Children,” she said. “He’s thirty-seven.”

“Oh,” Lily said. “I hadn’t realized he was ten years older than you.”

“Yeah. He doesn’t look it. Or act it.”

“Or you act older. Probably a combination of both. But that’s not the point.”

“No,” she said. “It’s not. I asked why he didn’t have children by now when he said he bought his house hoping that it wasn’t just him at some point.”

“What did he say?” Lily asked.

“That they never got on the same page at the same time. They were married for twelve years. He put his career first so he could provide for a family the way he wanted when the time came. When he was ready, Noelle said it was her time to move up in her career and put that first. I know that they loved each other but maybe didn’t always have the best of marriages.”

“No one has a great marriage one hundred percent of the time,” Lily said. “Don’t think otherwise.”

“I never did.”

Though she’d seen a lot of marriages in her life, they were all different. From arranged marriages to love matches, but there were always fights and issues along the way.

A journey, as Lily had said, and she had to remind herself of that too.

“Do you think Wesley isn’t really ready and you are setting yourself up for heartache? That maybe you might get too close to him and you’re nothing more than the rebound relationship? Like his first out of the gate?”

“That’s it exactly. You get it.”

“I do. But remember one thing: the first relationship after a loss doesn’t mean it’s not going to work. It could just mean it took that long to find the right one.”

“Like you and Zane?” she asked.

“Exactly like me and Zane.”

“I needed to hear that,” she said.

“I’m glad I could help. Now we can talk business unless you need some more sisterly advice.”

“I’m good. Thank you. I appreciate you indulging me.”

“There is no indulging here,” Lily said. “This business thrives because it’s not only a good strong team we have but a bond of family too. A different kind of family. Remember that.”

“I will.”

Get Out And Play

“Hi.”

Wesley looked up to see his mother standing in the doorway to his office; then she walked in. “Hey,” he said. “You’re here early.”

She normally started her day late morning since she worked later than he did.

He’d been getting here by seven and leaving around seven most times too. Sometimes later, but hardly earlier unless he’d made plans with Jasmine.

He’d told himself he wasn’t going to put work before his personal life but found it was happening.
