But it won’t be. Not for Ilya, anyway. Not ever again. She needs to understand that.

“I’m so sorry, Kirill. I had no idea.”

“The list of what you don’t know about us could go on forever.”

She frowns. “Don’t say it like that. I know enough.”

“You didn’t know enough to keep my brother inside and away from people or overstimulation after he’s seen a flashback.”

“Because you didn’t tell me about the flashbacks!”

“I told you there’s a reason I do things the way I do!” I drag a hand through my hair. “Everything I do has a reason. Everything I do is to protect my brother from ever feeling as scared as he did the day his own father nearly killed him. That is my only goal.”

Rayne shivers, her skin still wet and prickled with goosebumps. “You can’t protect him from everything, Kirill.”

“Watch me.”

“That’s what I’ve been doing,” she whispers. “But I’m sick of watching; I want to help. You told me to take care of Ilya, so that’s what I’m doing.”

“And now, I’m telling you to do as I say. Stay away from Ilya. Go back to scrubbing toilets.”

“Is that really what you want?” Rayne steps forward so we’re standing chest to chest and looks up at me. “You want me to blindly follow your orders without having any original thoughts in my head?”

I consider the question for a second and then nod. “Yeah, that sounds pretty fucking great.”

She moves to slap my chest again and I catch her hand in mid-air.

“Let go of me!” She tries to swing at me with her other hand and I catch it, too.

I pin her arms against her sides and spin her around, pressing her back to my front. She wiggles her hips in her attempt to get free, and we both feel the growing bulge in my jeans.

She gasps and tries to dig her elbow into me. “Let go! You are an asshole.”

I let go of her arm and slide my hand up the center of her body. I curl my fingers around the base of her throat. Gently, I tilt her head back so I can look into her eyes.

“And you work for me,” I tell her. Her pulse is thrumming against my fingers. Her entire body practically vibrates in my arms. “Remember your place in this house or you won’t have one at all. Do you understand?”

She licks her lips, and I can still remember the way they felt wrapped around me. I want it again. Right here. Right now.

It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours and I’m looking for my next hit. Desperate to feel her body under mine again.

But my brother is inside. And he needs me more than Rayne does.

“I don’t have the time to waste on someone who can’t understand a simple concept,” I snarl. “Do you understand me or not?”

Her blue eyes darken as she glares up at me. “Understood.”

“Good.”

All at once, I shove her aside and march up to the house. I have no idea if she follows behind me. I don’t turn around and check.

As soon as I’m inside, I turn to head up to Ilya’s apartment, but I’m stopped by someone pointedly clearing their throat. I grimace before I even turn to face her, already knowing what I’ll find.

“I promise you I’m not in the mood for this today, Viktoria. Just leave.”

“Really? You could’ve fooled me. I saw you out there with your little slut.” She flings a manicured hand towards the windows. “Looks like you were definitely ‘in the mood.’ The two of you aren’t even pretending to keep things professional these days.”

“I had to take disciplinary action.”
