She snorts. “You promised her a good spanking in your room later?”

“Would that make you jealous?”

“Hardly. Just familiar with your tastes.” Viktoria arches a daring brow. “Does Rayne let you have your dirty little way with her? Or is she too squeaky clean for that kind of thing?”

“She walked away from your murder attempt, so I don’t think being soft is an issue.”

“Attempted murder?” She rolls her eyes. “I barely grazed her.”

I sigh. “You should go before I decide I’m not too tired to deal with you after all.”

“You wouldn’t do anything rash right before the family dinner. Daddy wouldn’t like that.”

“Well, considering your daddy put you on the auction block to help save his own ass, I’m not so sure he’ll give a shit what I do with you.”

Her expression sharpens, hiding her obviously genuine hurt. “That girl doesn’t know who you are, does she?”

“She knows enough.”

“No, she doesn’t.” Viktoria chuckles. “But I do. I’ve seen the bodies you leave in your wake. And I’m not scared.”

“You should be. I’ve asked you to leave twice and you’re still here. I won’t ask again.”

Viktoria’s eyes widen for just a second. But she backs towards the door. “Whatever you see in her, it will fade. You’ll get bored and you’ll realize there’s only one woman who is compatible with the life you lead. Only one woman is willing to give you exactly what you want.”

“Since you’re still talking, we know for sure it isn’t you.” I turn and head up the stairs. “But if you’d really like to give me what I want, skip the dinner.”

Viktoria laughs bitterly and mumbles something, but I don’t hear it and it doesn’t matter. If there’s one thing that can be said about her, it’s that the woman does not know when to give up. She’ll see this fake relationship through to the bitter end.

And it will end. At dinner with her family tonight seems like as good a time as any.

RAYNE

Alexis and Lana are sitting by the pool when I walk up the driveway. The last time I saw them, they were drunk. And I hadn't stolen Mitchell's car. Or slept with Kirill again. And I hadn't been promoted, and then demoted.

Basically, a lot has changed in one day. I have zero percent desire to rehash it.

I duck and try to skip past the trellis that separates the pool from the driveway, but Alexis spots me. "Raynie, over here!" She waves her arm over her head. The bracelets on her wrist jangle.

I sigh, straighten up, and pad around the gate. "Hey, hey. What's up?"

"Lana and I were actually here waiting for you. Lana thought you'd try to slink off to the guest house without saying hi, so we wanted to intercept you.'

"I'm not slinking. I'm just tired. I was working and… I’m not trying to hide."

“We get it,” Lana cuts in. “Stealing cars is hard work.”

“I also returned it,” I wince. “Is Mitchell mad?”

“If he knew, he’d be pissed. Livid. You’d probably be packing your bags right now. But that’s onlyifhe knew. And I’m not gonna tell him.”

“Wewon’t tell him,” Alexis amends. “Everyone makes bad choices when they’re drunk.”

I hold up a hand. “I was not drunk. You two were drunk. But I wasn’t. I never would have driven if I was drunk.”

She holds up her hands in surrender. “Potato, potahto. Regardless, your secret is safe with us.”
