He lets me get in before closing the door and walking around the other side.

I lean over and give Gus a stroke in the back before turning and buckling myself in.

“Morning, Jamie,” I say.

“Hey, Sidnie!” He smiles at me in the rear-view mirror.

Mack gets in the other side, closes the door, and also buckles himself in.

“How are you feeling?” I ask Mack as Jamie pulls away.

“Better. I slept all night without waking. I think Gus thought I’d died. I woke up to find him poking me with his paw and staring at me.”

I chuckle. “So you’re all ready for the day?”

“Yep. Raring to go.”

“So tell me a bit about the tournament.”

“Huxley does it each year. It’s at Redwood’s Sports Club. You pay to enter, and he invites business people from all over the city to come and watch, all proceeds to charity.”

“Ah. I hadn’t realized it was quite so high profile.”

“It’s a big event. There’s an impressive lunch halfway through and an awards ceremony at the end.”

“How many rounds?”

“Eight couples, so seven rounds, and there are four courts, which means there’s no downtime, so that’s cool.”

“Who else is playing?”

“Hux and Elizabeth—they’ll be easy to beat because she’s only two foot tall.”

I giggle. “Titus?”

“Yep, I think he’s partnering Chrissie, one of Huxley’s other sisters. Not sure who else is playing. They’ll all be club members. It should be fun.”

“Are you playing, Jamie?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “I don’t know one end of a racket from the other. I’ll be watching, and Gus-sitting.” He glances at his brother in the mirror. “You should be warned, Mack is very competitive.”

“What a shock.” I grin at him. “Are you going to throw a tantrum if we lose a game?”

“We won’t lose,” he says. “We’re gonna win the tournament.”

I feel the first flutter of alarm. “I’ve never played at club level. And I’m a bit out of practice.”

“Maybe, but you’re playing with me, and I just know we’re going to make a great team.” His eyes gleam. He’s nuclear-powered today, sparks practically flying from his fingers and the tips of his hair. Mmm. I just hope he has enough energy left for the end of the day. I’m in the mood for some fantastic sex.

His lips curve up. “Stop it,” he murmurs.

“How come you can read my thoughts?” I complain, poking him with the end of my racket.

“It’s not difficult.” His eyes take on that lazy look that I know means he’s thinking about sex.

“Get a room, you two,” Jamie says with amusement.

I giggle. “It’s his fault.”
