“They’re mini sedative darts,” Lisa said as she stalked toward him. “The thrower releases about a hundred little pins at a time. I designed the system myself... fast acting, but unfortunately the effects don’t last long—only a few minutes. So once you hit a target with them, you need to move fast,” she said, pulling out a knife.

James blinked, seeing three of her.

“I didn’t kill Fred,” James said.

She looked at him like a cat playing with a mouse. He blinked again, fighting to keep his eyes open. He didn’t know how long the sedatives would last, he had no sense of time, but he had to hold on for a few minutes. He thought of Mak and his daughter.

Fight, James. He blinked again but keeping his eyes open seemed an insurmountable task.

She leaned over him. ‘I always wondered what it would feel like to kill you,” she said, her words like an echo in his mind.

“Proof... your phone...” James repeated.

She raised an eyebrow.

James heard the beeping of her phone but it sounded a million miles away.

The last thing he remembered was Lisa’s eyes locked on his.

Black Widow.

The sedative proved too strong and James could no longer fight.

Darkness pulled him under.

His cheek stung and his eyes snapped open.

“Wake up!” she commanded.

James felt like he’d been hit by a train, and it took him a moment to remember where he was. And who he was with.

“Wake up!” Lisa commanded.

His eyes focused and he saw her clearly.

“Get up!” she said, taking his hand and pulling him to his feet. James swayed, reaching for the wall to steady himself.

“Can you run?” she asked.

James blinked. “Where?” he asked, his mind not yet firing on all cylinders.

“To the tracks,” she said.

It all came back to James in a flood of images and he immediately felt stronger. He didn’t know if it was the sedative wearing off, or if it was adrenaline because Lisa was standing in front of him and she hadn’t killed him. She knew the truth and believed him.

“For so many years I couldn’t get to you, now I realize why... it was never supposed to be you,” James said. “Maybe your brother has been looking over you all these years.”

She inhaled a shaky breath and a sad smile spread across her lips. “I want that to be true.”

“Truce,” James said, extending his hand.

She shook his hand. “Truce. Now let’s end this.”

“James, the trains have started. You have seven minutes, no more,”Samuel said quickly.

“We need to go!” James said as they turned and ran. James was slow on his feet, but Lisa hadn’t slit his throat when she’d had the chance and he could run—albeit slowly.

“We don’t have long,” he said as they walked side-by-side once they were in the concourse, then down the ramps toward the platform.
