James was feeling better and more alert with every second that passed.

“When we get to the platform, jump down and sprint. Security won’t follow when they know there’s a train approaching. We have five minutes. That’s it,” he said to her and she nodded.

They jumped onto the tracks.

JENNA

“Wake up,” he said as he smacked her face.

She forced her eyes open, her vision taking a moment to clear. The darkness didn’t help. It took her another moment to realize where she was.

No! No!

She tried to sit up and scoot off the tracks, but she couldn’t move. Her eyes landed on the red cable wrapped around her ankle.

Jenna couldn’t remember how she got here. Everything was so hazy.

Footsteps echoed through the tunnel and Lachlan’s head snapped in their direction. Her gaze followed and she almost sank with relief when she saw Lisa.

But that relief was short-lived when she realized Lisa was walking beside James Thomas.

She frowned, shaking her head. Her mind was so groggy and she just wanted to sleep.

She looked again, thinking she must’ve imagined it but she hadn’t.

Something was very wrong.

“Lisa!” Jenna called out, her voice thick like the fog that clouded her mind.

Lisa came to kneel beside her but her eyes were different.

Jenna’s stomach churned.

Her eyes bounced to James Thomas, the corner of his lips turning up. “I’m so glad you’re awake,” he said, his voice eerily cold.

Jenna looked back to Lisa, but it did nothing to ease her tight throat. “Lisa, what is going on? He’ll kill you!”

Lisa shook her head. “No, he won’t.”

Jenna frowned, her eyes darting between Lisa and James.

“I don’t understand,” Jenna said. “Get me out of here, please!”

“But you of all peopleshouldunderstand,” Lisa said. “It was you who killed Fred.”

Jenna couldn’t breathe. Lisa’s words were like a vortex, sucking the oxygen from her lungs. She shook her head. “No. No, Lisa, please. Whatever he’s told you, it’s all lies,” she said, frantic.

“Is it? Because you did charter a private jet from Paris to New York the day Fred was killed. And then you did dispose of your boyfriend—your alibi for the Paris trip. You killed my brother and you leftmymark on him. My brother!” she screamed in agony.

“You forced my hand the day you decided to make a deal with him to join the CIA,” Jenna said quickly. “I overheard the conversation you had with him. You were going to go to New York. You were going to work with him at the CIA. You were going to destroy everything we’d built. You were too dangerous for the CIA, they would’ve disposed of you like they had tried to do to him,” she said, looking to James.

His hard eyes stared back at her.

“You really did do it,” Lisa said, bending over like she was grasping for breath.

Jenna stilled. Had Lisa still had doubts? Had she not known for sure? A wave of nausea rolled through her and she fought to hold it back.

Lisa nodded, sounding breathless when she spoke, “I was going to work for the CIA. And I had also negotiated a role foryou. It was my only request. I would never have left you behind, but instead you took away the one person I truly loved in this world. The one person who had never given up on me. You took him from me!” she said, her words clipped, laced with anger.
