James looked past her toward the end of the tunnel. “We need to move, we can’t stay here,” he said. He was silent a moment, then said, “Copy.”

“There’s some commotion at the platform and security everywhere. There’s a maintenance door this way,” he said, tilting his head toward the other end of the tunnel. “My guys are unlocking it. It’ll be the easiest way out.”

Her first instinct was to distrust him—old habits die hard—but she needed to cast those feelings aside now. She was beginning to see why her brother had liked him.

She cleared her throat. “Lead the way,” she said. As he turned to run, her eyes dropped to the tracks.

She felt no sympathy, only regret. Regret that she hadn’t killed her with her own hands.

“Come on,” James said, looking over his shoulder.

She turned and ran, catching up to him.

The tunnel door opened as they approached and she internally cringed as the man that opened the door met her gaze. She recognized him—he was the man Jenna had secured to the tracks.

She owed him an apology.

He held open the door, ushering them in. They walked through the maintenance hallways and out onto the streets.

A black sedan pulled up and she was ushered in.

As they drove away, she rested her head back against the seat.

“What now?” she asked.

James looked to her, the corner of his lips turning up. “Now we start over. I want to hear about the deal Fred made for you to come back to the CIA.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Why?”

“Because, if I like the deal, I’ll make you the same one. You’re the deadliest assassin the world has ever seen... and I’d like you on my team.”

She almost laughed. She was going to work with the man she’d spent almost half her life trying to kill. She was still contracted to kill him, but she had a hunch if she gave James Florrick’s name he’d take care of that issue.

“How’s that for a twist?” James asked, giving an odd grin. But then his smile faded. “And, I have some things for you. After Fred’s death, I didn’t know what to do with his belongings, so I packed everything into boxes and stored them at my headquarters. They’re yours now. You can take your time and go through them. Keep what you want, donate what you want... but I want you to have whatever you need. He loved you,” James said, his eyes softening. “You were his little sister, and he would’ve done anything to protect you,” James said.

He looked into her eyes, nodding slowly.

“I will do the same,” James said.
