By our senior year of college, my small fight with Halima from back when we were in high school was long forgotten. We shared a suite in the dorms of our university and were closer than ever. Most of our crew from home was in the same college, a couple of hours’ drive from our small town.

I never cut my hair again, and it had grown back into its long, loose curls.

A lot had changed. Mostly for the better. But one thing remained the same annoying truth. I was still deeply and irrevocably head over heels for Barrett. Except now, I no longer entertained any hope of reciprocity and was pretty much pissed at him twenty-four seven…

“You coming?” Halima asks, checking her reflection in our shared suite’s entrance mirror. She fixes her hair and turns around to make sure her dress falls right.

I raise an eyebrow in a ‘really?’ fashion.

“Girl, please. There’s only one exam left. We’re just going to a coffee shop. Live a little.”

“I live plenty, thank you very much. And going to hang out with your crush and a bunch of friends doesn’t really say finals week. I’ll pass.”

Halima rolls her eyes.

“Malik isn’t my crush. I just think he’s hot.”

She waggles her eyebrows suggestively, making me giggle. I shake my head, then stuff my earbuds back in, redirecting my gaze to the textbook open on my bed. The sounds of nature from my focus playlist mostly drown the click of Halima’s heels and her shuffling around. Still, I can’t wait till she leaves so I can fully concentrate on my studying. I’m planning to do a few hours of course review before I crash.Becausethese damn finals are kicking my ass!

Finding it impossible to give the textbook my full attention, I pause the white noise playing through my earbuds and stretch my arms, before laying on my side with my head propped up on one hand.

Pretending to study my nails, I ask in a voice way too heavily infused with bored indifference to be genuine, “Who’s going?”

Halima tilts her head to the side, smirking at me.

“I thought it wasn’t a good idea to hang out with one’s crush during finals?” She teases.

I grin right back at my bestie, who knows me way too well. Then I come out with it, asking, “fine, is he going?”

Halima studies me for a beat before answering with a question of her own, “would that change your mind?”

I shake my head firmly.Nope, I’m determined to stay focused on my work. And resisting the pull of a certain brown-eyed boy is definitely part of the challenge I want to best.

“Not that I know of. You know Barrett’s as much of a goody- two-shoes as you are. You two probably have the same plans for the evening,” Halima mumbles through pursed lips, busy applying gloss. “OK, I’m out of here. Last chance…” she trails off.

I shake my head again, then wish her a good time. When the door clicks behind her, I slump back on my bed, eyes to the ceiling. I’m not sure much studying will actually get done tonight-

A knock at the door interrupts my lazy thoughts.

“Yeah?”

The handle goes down and a low, masculine voice greets, “hello.”

“Hello,” I respond, swiftly sitting up straight. Thank God, I’m decent. Casually dressed, but it’ll have to do. It’s Friday night. I’m in my pink flannel pajamas, alone in my room. If someone felt this was the time to stop by, they’ll just have to deal.

None other than Barrett Adam pokes his stupid handsome face inside the room. Why, Lord? Why?!

Fuck,he’s pretty.A couple of inches taller than when we were in high school. And he filled out nicely… The tall boy, who was all muscles on a slim form, bulked up into a delicious-looking man.

Fuck me sideways, when will this guy stop torturing me?!

“How are you, Mia? I hope I’m not bothering.”

Ugh, his voice! It’s low and gravelly, exquisitely luscious and enticing. It vibrates through my entire body, makes my nipples stand to attention, my pussy contract, and my clit tingle.Fuck.

“No bother. I’m good, thanks.” I respond, my voice turning guarded, as always when I’m in this man’s presence. Unrequited infatuation and all that jazz…
