“Yasmine,” I croak. “I don’t want you to go alone.”

“You’re not coming with me,” she stresses. “You need to stay here with Rose. Besides, someone might know something of Samuel. Michael speaks Spanish, so we can let you know if we hear anything.”

“Thank you,” I whisper and close my eyes. “That’s kind of you, but I’m still not convinced you should travel alone. Group rules.”

She chuckles. “Cute. You know I love you, right?”

“Yes. And I love you too.”

“I have to go. We’ll talk soon, Edes.”

Placing my phone on the bedside table, I consider the possibility of traveling with her. Only I’m not prepared to take Rose with me or leave her alone.

The best solution is to remain here patiently and hope every day I’m doing the right thing by not searching for the man I love.

Only my patience is measured equally by my stubbornness. Opening my laptop, I type out an email to the USA embassy in Colombia and explain my fiancé, Samuel McMahon, is in the Colombian jungle, and I’m afraid for his safety. I provide dates he was last in Canaima and how he’s trekking through the jungle.

I’m sure they would be thinking,WTF?

I comment further, explaining I don’t expect to hear from him, but I’m concerned he could be unwell or injured. Then I ask if they could check if he has been hospitalized or arrested as I can’t communicate with him.

Being I’m in Australia and his parents are in the USA, I expect they’ll be notified first of any news. I’m okay with that, but my point is the embassy needs to be alerted that he’s a possible missing person.

Four Weeks Later…

The unopened email in my inbox from Samuel’s parents offers hope. They are my closest link to Samuel since every place and person we know has led to nothing.

Dearest Eden,

Thank you for the photos of Rose. We’d like to Skype so we can see Rose, and she may come to recognize our faces until we can meet her in person.

One particular photo of you and Rose concerned us. You look exhausted. If there’s anything we can do to help until Samuel comes to Australia, please let us know. If you need any finance for Rose’s needs, please don’t be embarrassed to ask for our help.

Samuel would want us to offer support.

Regards,

Christopher and Caroline McMahon

For a moment, I don’t respond. Why are they not concerned when their son’s life is at risk? AndSamuel would want them to offer support. Seriously? Wouldn’t they want to offer support to their only grandchild?

I type out a reply.

Hello from Downunder,

I’m glad you enjoyed the photos of Rose.

Please don’t be concerned. I assure you we’re fine and don’t need any financial aid.

Regards,

Eden and Rose

No photo is attached because their email has left me disgruntled.
