Snapchat?

I swipe the screen to accept the group Snapchat video call. One by one, my friends’ faces appear on the screen.

“You answered,” Amy screams. I can’t help the smirk in reaction to her big, bright smile.

“Hi, girls,” I sing. “Checking in on me?”

“Damn right,” Yasmine says and blows me a kiss. “When Amy said you could still be in Canaima, we thought let’s do a group chat.”

“Where are you?”

“Having a late lunch at Yasmine’s,” Amy responds. “What time is it there?”

“After two.”

“Shit, tell Samuel we’re sorry,” Yasmine says. “Hi, Samuel.” She waves.

“He’s not here.” Before I explain, Yasmine’s brows tighten.

“He’s left you alone, again?”

“He’s supposed to be back by now. He is with Asoo looking into…” I decide not to explain the situation to my friends. I shake my head. “It’s not important. He’ll be home soon. Hey, do you want to see my baby bump?”

“Hell, yes,” Amy says.

I stand and tug up my tank top and angle the camera for my friends to see the swell of my abdomen.

“You’re huge.” Amy laughs.

“You look beautiful,” Yasmine says in a gentle voice. “I wish you were here so we could experience it with you.”

“Yeah… I miss you both.” I take a breath and force the emotion from building in my chest. “One good thing, I haven’t had to spend a shitload of money on an entire new maternity wardrobe while in the jungle.”

Amy chuckles. “No fun in that.”

“How are you really?” Yasmine asks.

I fake a sincere smile. “I’m good. We’re both healthy. The time has passed so quickly, and it won’t be long until I’m home again.”

“I miss us,” Amy says. “I miss going to the Shores, just the three of us for cocktail Fridays.”

“Even if I were there—”

“I know, I know,” Amy says quickly. “Stay safe and hurry home.” She wipes an eye, and my stomach drops to my feet.

“Soon, the three of us will be taking long walks along the beach behind a carriage,” Yasmine chimes in.

I can picture it clearly and smile at the thought. “We have plenty of good times ahead of us with a plus one.”

“You mean plus two,” Amy corrects.

“I’m still working on him,” I reply honestly.

Yasmine’s eyes widen.

“He has some work to do first but hopes to make it back to Australia in time for the birth,” I lie.

Yasmine’s lips press thin. As though she senses my apprehension, she smiles at Amy. “Have you told her about your new guy?”
