“Eden, keep me up to date with what’s happening.”

“I will.”

“Stay safe, sis.”

“I will. Love you.”

With an overbearing need to sigh, I allow my shoulders to drop. There’s one more phone call to make, but I’ll have to wait until morning to speak to my parents. Shuffling off the bed, I go to Rose and peer down at my daughter. She has the purest pale skin with light hair on her crown, and her eyebrows are barely noticeable. Tiny lips pucker, and she stretches out her back.

Oh my. I could watch her sleep for hours.

“Are you ready to feed?” I whisper. I inhale a sharp breath, and my hand rises to my right breast. Suddenly, a tingling sensation in my breasts is followed by a feeling of fullness. I think my milk just came in. Rose gives a little whimper, so I pick her up and cradle her until I’m in a chair. Adjusting my clothing almost comes naturally, and I position her on my breast. Her little eyes open as she sucks slower and stronger. “That’s it, my Rose. Good girl,” I whisper.

“That’s truly a sight to behold.”

I glance up at Samuel standing in the doorway. He comes to us and brushes a long finger over her little head.

“My milk came down,” I say proudly as though it’s an achievement.

His lips curl into a smile. “A few days of her getting the extra rest to grow and feed without complication, and you’ll be on track to going home.”

“Home? I thought I’d remain here for at least another month. I mean, you’re the one who’s over the top about her immune system.”

My phone vibrates on the table, and Rose pulls off my breast with a scowl. I help her reattach, and before I can say anything, Samuel has picked up my phone.

“It’s your father.”

“Right. I sent him a message and thought he’d be asleep.”

Samuel swipes the screen. “Evening, Mr. Monteford. This is Samuel.”

I hold out my hand, but he walks away from me.

“No,” I say firmly. “Let me speak first.” My heart pounds in my chest. My father will be concerned, and I wanted to calm him down first. “Samuel, you’re so frustrating.”

He stops and turns to me. His gaze locks with mine, equally determined. Suddenly, his expression softens. “Eden is feeding our beautiful daughter. She’s almost finished and excited to tell you about her. I’ll hand her cell to her to speak first.”

He gives the phone to me and mouths, “I also want to speak to him.”

“Hey, Dad. Congratulations, you’re a grandfather again.”

“Are you okay, sweet pea?”

“Yes, I’m great. I’m in a hospital in Guyana. We’re all well. I’m sorry to wake you, so we can chat tomorrow if you like.”

“It’s fine. I’m relieved to hear your voice. And now I can’t wait to meet my beautiful granddaughter. When are you coming home?”

He has jumped to this subject quickly. Doing my best to ignore Samuel’s serious expression, I steel myself to answer calmly. “Oh, you know, whenever the birth certificate arrives, and it’s safe for Rose to fly.”

Rose pulls off my breast and has a little vomit. “Oh, honey.”

“May I speak to him while you care for Rose?” Samuel holds out his hand.

“Dad, I’m handing you over to Samuel for a moment. I need to attend to Rose.”

“Okay, love. Mum is also here, and she wants to ask you questions about the birth.”

Samuel takes the phone.
