“I thought you were fixed after the scandal.”

“Fixed? Mother, it’s time for you to understand one thing. I. Am. Bisexual. It’s not a disease or a preference. It’s who I am.”

“We paid professionals to take that away from you.”

“Again, it’s not something you can just erase. It’s part of my making. What you did was send me to a center where they raped me and tortured me. You and my father treated me worse than an animal because you can’t accept me for who I am.”

“This is a sin.”

“According to whom? Your religion? I want to see where the bible says that loving someone is wrong.”

“It must be in Karenthians 6:1. They shall love who I say,” Matt comments casually, then steps closer to my mother. “Listen, Violet—”

“My name is Viviane. Mrs. Cooperson to you.”

“It’s just the same. We’re leaving for a couple of days. The nurses are here to assist your husband. Not you. If, when we come back, one of them complains about the way you treated them, or I see that your husband wasn’t taken care of properly, I’ll convince your son to stop helping you and just leave you to rot.”

She looks at me with pure fear. “You wouldn’t do that, would you?”

Of course, I wouldn’t, but she doesn’t need to know that. “You better do as he says. I mean, look what happened to Fey.”

“I need you topay for her lawyer.”

I shrug. “As I said when they took her away, she can access her trust. It’s time she learns that every action has a consequence.”

As we leave the house, I feel better. She’s never going to accept me, but she’s learning that I’m no longer going to bend for her. Never again.

ChapterFifty-Four

Matthew

It’s beena long couple of days. Anyone would think I haven’t had much rest, but for the first time since the tabloids disrupted our life, I feel relaxed. There are a lot of moving parts I have yet to solve, but my goal was to rekindle my friendship with Tristan.

I’m pretty sure we’re more than just friends, but we didn’t go back to where we fuck without knowing what the other feels or needs. We haven’t done more than kissing and holding each other at night.

One day soon, we’ll take that step, but not until we’re sure of each other. They say the third time’s a charm. We’re at the presidential suite of the Merkel Hotel in Boston. He’s on a video conference with Mark. I step out on the balcony and call Thea. We’ve exchanged a few texts since the premiere, but I haven’t heard much from her.

“Hey,” she answers almost immediately.

“How was the visit with your mom?” This is a good conversation starter. I don’t want to lead with how I’ve been spending the past few days with Tristan.

“It was different. For starters, I had Dad with me, and she was more open.”

“Hey, do you want room service or—”Sorry,Tristan mouths.

“Is that…?”

“Tristan,” I finish her question.

“Oh. Are you two…”

“I’ve been helping him with his family business while he gives me a hand with some permits and other legalities I need to move the production company.”

“You decided what you’re doing with it?”

“We did,” I answer. “You live in Seattle, and he’s looking for a home in the Northwest. It’s wise to move everything there. I’ll have offices in Vancouver too. It’s all about making sense of the future.”

“Your future with him?”
