“Almost seven.”

“Oh wow.” She furrowed her brow. “I have to leave soon.”

“Yep.”

Rebecca sat up, pulling the sheet tighter. “Last night was...”

“Epic.”

“That’s a good word. One of a few I can think of to describe it.”

I stared at her for a long moment, flipping through the events of the previous day. “I don’t regret any of it.”

“Me neither.” She shrugged one shoulder. “My journalism career might have regrets, but I don’t.”

“You can still write the profile.”

“You keep saying that.” Rebecca counted on her fingers. “I think having sex with my interview subject multiple times in a twenty-four-hour period obliterates any vestige of professionalism.”

“No one needs to know. It can be our little secret.” I crossed the bed, kissed her lips, and pulled only the slightest bit away. Whenever I was with her, she had an uncanny way of making me want to stay near her. “Besides, nobody ever said the media was fair.”

“That’s true, but I was trying to be.”

“So, when you’re writing it, just pretend it didn’t happen.”

“But it did.”

“Hopefully not the last time.”

Her eyes widened. “Do you mean that?”

“Well, yeah. I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t. That’s not my style.”

I cupped her chin. I was flying by the seat of my pants here, saying things I’d never expected to say, words I never envisioned leaving my mouth, but I couldn’t stop myself, even if I wanted to. Maybe it was the lack of sleep. Maybe it was the afterglow of the greatest business triumph I’d ever had. Or maybe it was because I was sick of the same driftless shit day after day, the meaningless life I’d built that was measured not in meaningful connections but in victories I could list in on a résumé. Whatever it was, I was in uncharted territory, and I didn’t give a damn.

Let’s do this.

“Crazy week ahead,” I added. “A lot on my plate with Chatter and the rest. But...can I see you next weekend?”

“Next weekend?”

“Sure. I’ll come to Cincinnati. I can take the jet.”

“The jet?”

I laughed. “Always sounds stupid whenever I say it aloud. Robert convinced me to get it a few years ago, and he was right, it did make my life more convenient.”

“Well, it would be nice to see you.”

I dropped my hand from her chin. “And we can...I don’t know...have dinner or something.”

“You don’t strike me as the kind of person who can show up to a random restaurant and simply have dinner.”

“That’s true.” I reluctantly slid away from her, glad she wasn’t outright vetoing my plan. “But my team will have a week to work on it, and I’m sure they’ll figure it out.”

“I’m sure.” She glanced around the bed and laughed. “I think my clothes are still out on the veranda.”

“Mine too. Give me a second.”
