Crap. “Are you sure? I could set you up with this girl from my English Lit class. She has major daddy issues and absolutely no standards.”

“Buckle up!” Lily hit the gas pedal, and the car jolted forward.

I braced a hand on the dashboard, following her gaze. I gasped when I saw three men following Mia. Charles’ men had caught up to her.

Tires screeched as Lily floored the accelerator.

Lily yelled at her bestie and waved for her to get out of the way. Mia jumped aside just in time and Lily hit two of the men with the passenger side of the Mercedes S Class. Then the car came to an abrupt halt.

Yuri cursed, threw open the car door, and jumped out.

“Where’s Comb-over?” Lily asked.

We both spotted him at the same time—to our left next to a Suburban. He aimed his gun at Mia and time began to move in slow motion.

I screamed in terror, feeling helpless as I couldn’t help Mia. Before I knew what was happening, Yuri took off at a run and jumped in front of Mia while shooting at Comb-over.

Mia yanked open the car door and jumped inside.

Yuri got in next. “Go, go, go!”

Lily gulped and stared at Mia. “I…”

When she didn’t move, I gestured at Yuri. He got out, opened the driver’s side door, and guided Lily to the backseat. Then he got behind the wheel and took off.

Mia pulled out a stack of papers. “Like stealing candy from a baby. I feel like I need to commemorate this day of badassness! Maybe I should get a tattoo of Princess Padmé or something.”

Yuri cut me an icy look as he made his way downtown. A pending feeling of doom came over me. I casually continued the conversation with the girls but knew this action would have severe repercussions.

KRISTOFF

I got off the phone and eyed Damon, who sat on the windowsill. Little bombs detonated inside my skull, one by one, like one stack of land mines landing on top of another stack. Flames danced on my skin.

“Yuri just told me the most amazing tale,” I gritted through clenched teeth. “It’s a story about damsels who were not in distress going on a fucking quest. Katya was among them.”

“So I’ve heard. I believe she led the way to slay a dragon.”

He didn’t seem surprised. He sounded impressed. I wanted to stab him.

What was it again they said about hell having no fury like a woman scorned? I wondered what the male equivalent of that phrase would be. Earth hath no rage like a man pushed to his limits.

“Her dorm days are over,” I snapped. “Yuri’s bringing her home. I want around the clock surveillance on her.”

Damon eyed me. “I’ll take care of it, but maybe you should take a walk, you know? So you don’t scare the girl.” He sounded concerned for her. He had reason to be.

“She’s not a girl. She’s a woman who has orchestrated a fucking hotel heist.” The smoldering tinder grew into a flame. “Tell Olga to take the night off. Same for the rest of the staff. I don’t want anyone in the west wing.”

Damon ran a hand through his hair. “Fuck.”

As for scaring her? I should hope to accomplish that feat. It was her absence of fear that bothered me.

“I’ve been too lenient with her.” She could’ve died ten different ways today. Yuri gave me the full details after he’d extracted them from Katya. Not only had she orchestrated a heist, but she’d been fucking kidnapped in broad daylight by a damn lawyer and I’d had no idea. Thesukahad threatened to cut off her hand. I was going to fuck him up.

I dialed Baran.

“Yeah?” He sounded haggard. And who could blame him? His wife had been the getaway driver.
