Which was why I knew where he headed next. “Bring me that lawyer.”

“Can’t do. He’s mine.”

“Excuse me?”

“My wife was his target. I have first rights on him.”

I ground my teeth. “You’re going to invoke Bratva law on me?”

“Not just Bratva law. You forget where I’m from. Also according toracon, I have first dibs on the soon-to-be dead motherfucker.”

I hated he had a point. “You damn Turkish mobsters with your damnraconrules. Guess I can take the sultan out of Istanbul, but not the Ottoman out of you.”

“I’m glad you see it my way.” He sounded pleased with himself.

I ended the call, smoldering on the inside. I was sick and tired of not having any actual power over Katya. Not according to the brotherhood, and certainly not in the way I craved. Not staking my claim on her had been a mistake. One I was going to correct as of today.

A silence descended onto the mansion. I barely contained my fury as I made my way to Katya’s room, a place I usually avoided. It smelled like her, and was decorated in bright shades of color, mimicking her gentle yet fiery soul.

It didn’t take long before I heard soft footsteps hurrying up the stairs. I smiled fiendishly. She thought she could avoid me by slipping into her room.

Katya appeared in the doorframe. She sighed in relief, then closed the door behind her.

I’d chosen my spot carefully, hiding yet out in the open. She just hadn’t looked into the shadows yet. Before, I’d avoided the shadows in her presence, but no more. I flicked on the lamp next to the couch, and the single bulp illuminated her room.

She jumped. “Kristoff? What are you doing in here?”

I took in her appearance. The black maid’s uniform didn’t do her any justice. I was going to rip it off her lush body, piece by piece, savoring every tear of the fabric.

I strolled up to her. Her throat bobbed nervously and her eyes darted to the left, then to the right.

I locked the door. “You have two seconds to make a run for the bathroom.” Perhaps it would be best if she got far away from me. My inner demon reeled at the thought, already having decided on her fate.

Her hands clenched, but she didn’t move. There was a mutinous gleam in her eyes. Silly girl, thinking she could go head-to-head with me and come out victorious.

“Why are you here instead of at your dorm, Katya?”

“This is my home. You said so yourself. I can come and go whenever I want.”

She was truly going to pretend as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened tonight.

“Poor little queen of the underworld,” I breathed as I boxed her in against the wall. “You want danger? To touch fire? I will make you burn.”

Her eyes rounded. “What?”

I twirled a lock of her hair around my finger. “We will go up in flames together.”

I felt a tremble move through her body. I wasn’t sure if it was from fear or desire, or both. It didn’t matter. She had pushed me too far, too often. I was done. And so was she. She just didn’t know it yet.

She must have seen the flames dancing in my eyes because her tone softened. “I can explain.”

“I’m sure you can, but it doesn’t matter now. See, your days of freedom are over, warrior princess.”

“I helped a friend. She was being—”

I leaned toward her. “I don’t care.”

Her jaw clenched. “You told me to balance the scale, and that actions speak louder than words.”
