“You enjoyed scaring the shit out of her, only to have her jump into the palm of your hand,” I accused him.

“I sure did.”

He made no apologies about it. I wasn’t sure why I expected him to. The Romanov men lived a fast and dangerous life. They didn’t worry about tomorrow because they lived as if it would never come. I both hated and admired that about them.

Angel stayed in the hallway as I made my way into class. When I spotted Jake waving at me, I took a seat next to him. It was time to spread my wings.

The trip back to the mansion was uneventful. I couldn’t wait until Yuri was back on his feet so he could drive me around instead. Angel wasn’t exactly helping me blend in. I raced up to my bedroom and came to a halt as soon as I opened the door.

My room was stacked with boxes. There were at least two dozen of them, all placed neatly against the wall near my desk.

He’d remembered. A warm feeling settled into the pit of my stomach.

I turned twenty-one this weekend. Only two more days and I could have a drink. New clothes were great and all, but I wanted more. Now if only Hades would let me out of the underworld and accompany me to a bar for my first tequila shots.

I peered into the boxes filled with clothes and shoes—all of which were from Neiman Marcus. Kristoff had gone a bit overboard this time. Every item was red. I assumed they were from him, because I couldn’t imagine anyone else going to the trouble. Ever since my Bulgarian ordeal, Kristoff had had difficulty saying no.

There was a card attached to one of the packages on my desk.

See you tomorrow.

T.

I frowned. Who was T? As I tried to figure out that mystery, my phone rang. Searching through the pile of boxes, I found my phone on the bed. I didn’t recognize the number.

“Hello?”

“Hi, is this Katya?” a woman asked.

I dropped onto my bed. “It sure is.”

“I’m Jocelyn Detta, but you can call me Jazzy. I…My husband is a friend of Kristoff’s.” She sounded hesitant.

Okay, now I got the connection. “What can I do for you, Jazzy?”

“You can join me and my crew for our girls night this weekend.”

“Oh.” Evidently Kristoff had set this up. I was being pawned off to a set of complete strangers for a night out. I didn’t know if I should feel mortified or ecstatic.

There was a silence for a beat. “I get that this is a bit awkward. And judging by your tone, you didn’t know I was going to call.”There was a smile in her voice that set me at ease.

“Not a clue,” I admitted.

“Men can be such dicks sometimes.”

I couldn’t help it, I smiled. “And then some.”

“We were bound to meet one day,” she claimed, much to my surprise. “Seeing as Kristoff is my cousin’s brother-in-law.”

Kristoff had a brother? He never spoke about his family. The only thing he’d told me was that his mother had been murdered. And I suspected he only did that to connect with me when we found out my mother had died in a car crash.

Since I didn’t want to admit that I was clueless about his family tree, I just hummed, “Uh-huh.”

“Well, screw whatever our guys tried to set up here. I would really like it if you’d join us Saturday night. We’re going to Flux to have a drink, shake our asses, and have fun.”

I had to give it to her. She sounded as if she genuinely wanted me to be there. “That sounds great.”
