“I missed you too,” he said. “I wanted to reach out to you earlier, but I didn’t want to until Dr. Pathak was taken into custody and the threat was completely gone.”

She nodded. There were so many things they had to discuss, share and even plan, but her throat seized up with grief. Another sob burst out of her.

“You love him,” Dheeraj said gently.

She wanted to deny it like she used to do before during their marriage, but tears filled up her eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“I’ve always known that you never stopped loving him, Sitara.”

Her heart ached at the truth.

“I know you feel guilty, but please don’t,” he said.

She shook her head. “It is my fault, Dheeraj. I shouldn’t have married you knowing I would always love Aarav. It wasn’t fair to you.”

Dheeraj sighed. “I’m not completely innocent either, Sitara. I married you because a part of me resented that my best friend swept away the girl I liked. I was too awestruck by you to tell you how I felt. Aarav didn’t know I liked you, and I hadn’t said anything to him either. By the time I thought I should, it was too late. You both had already fallen in love with each other. But later… when you broke up with him and when you proposed marriage to me, I grabbed the chance to marry you.”

She had sensed Dheeraj’s crush before, which was why she knew he would accept her proposal. It was selfish of her, but she convinced herself into thinking she would make Dheeraj happy by being a good wife to him.

“You deserve someone who loves you the most, Dheeraj,” she whispered.

He smiled. “I know. And I did find a woman who loves me the way I love her.”

Dheeraj pulled out a phone from his pocket. And then, tapping on the phone screen, he smiled before showing it to her.

It was a picture of a young, pretty woman. The woman was dressed in simple traditional clothes and she had a beautiful, cheerful smile.

“This is Radha,” he said. “She is my wife.”

Sitara was shocked.

“I fell in love with Radha and married her during the time I lost my memory.” He smiled with a lost, dreamy look in his eyes. “She’s very different from you, Sitara. I don’t feel tongue tied or awestruck by her. When I’m with her, I feel comfortable, happy and content with a sense of belonging. I want to spend the rest of my life with her.”

Sitara felt happy for him. “She is beautiful, Dheeraj,” she said softly. “She’s also lucky to love a man like you.”

“Thank you,” he said. “We are expecting our first child in two months. I married her with a different name, which I plan to keep and continue my life as I did in the past two years. I love my simple life there. I never did feel like I belonged here. I only came back because I wanted to make sure you were safe and tell you about Radha in person.”

He smiled seeing the look of shock on her face. “Yes, Dheeraj Murthy will remain dead to the world. Which means that you and Aarav are legally married.”

Her heart jerked at the revelation.

“Aarav has always you too, Sitara. He came as soon as he found out that you were in danger. He didn’t allow anyone else to be assigned to the mission. And I was relieved to know he would be the one protecting you.”

She was shocked that Aarav had taken up the assignment rather than it being assigned to him.

“You and Aarav belong together. Please don’t worry about me. Go to him.”

Her eyes stung. “Thank you,” she said and hugged him tightly, praying for a lifetime of happiness for the kind and compassionate man. “Goodbye, Dheeraj.”

He smiled. “Goodbye, Sitara.”

Brushing her tears away, she immediately began planning.

It wasn’t going to be easy. But she had to woo her bossy husband.

CHAPTER 25

It took four hours to finally track where Aarav had gone to brood and sulk.
