She closes her eyes and swallows hard. When she opens her eyes again, the doubt is gone, replaced with resolve mixed with raw desire. “Really?”

“Hell, yeah. I’m going crazy over here.”

I lean in close and her chin comes up, her lips parted. We’re so close I can feel the heat of her breath on my cool lips.

The blast of a horn and shouting breaks us apart.

“Hey, Jake! We need you out here.”

Fuck my life.

I step back and Lia slides away from me. “I’ll be there in a minute,” I shout back.

Lia’s hands are clasped in front of her, and a bolt of frustration whips through me when she sends me her practiced smile. “Okay, so thanks for lunch, and the truck will work perfect.”

I park my hands on my hips and hang my head. “Yeah, you’re welcome.”

“I’ve got to go, but I’ll…um…be back in a couple of days to get started on everything.”

All I can do is nod helplessly while I watch her put all her guards back in place. “I’ll be here.”

She turns and walks away, and it’s a familiar sight.

And just like it did all those years ago, it hurts like hell.

Lia

“Wow,y’all are really getting this place transformed.”

Jake strolls into the lobby, looking around. He looks dark and dangerous with his dark stubble covering his jaw. The black T-shirt and dark jeans combo fits his frame in a way that makes me need to clench my thighs.

The act of running his hands through the red cloth he holds shouldn’t look sexy. But all I can think about is how those hands would feel on me.

I clear my throat. “Uh, yeah. It’s moving along. Family coming through in a pinch.”

He plants his hands on his hips and grins. “I knew you’d been busy this week. I like it. It’s going to be great.”

I preen. “Thank you.”

“We’re missing one thing, though.”

I frown, looking around. “What?”

“What’s Santa’s workshop without a Christmas tree?”

I place a hand to my forehead, panicked. “Holy shit. I forgot a tree.”

He chuckles. “You were busy.” He gestures to the room. “It doesn’t even look like a mechanic shop anymore.”

I raise a hand and let it drop to my thigh. “I don’t know how I missed it, but I did.”

Jake tosses the rag into the trash can and walks toward me. “Well, let’s go buy a tree then.”

“Now?”

“Well, yeah. Unless you have a hot date or something.”
