Her hands are clasped in front of her, and her smile is nervous. “I’d like to talk.”

I shrug, feigning indifference, and turn to shut the hood. The slam of metal hitting metal echoes through the small building. “I don’t have anything to say to you.”

She blows out a breath and then moves closer to me, her gaze on the floor. When she stops in front of me, she lifts her chin, and those blue eyes hit me full force.

I bite back a groan. Her eyes have always been my undoing.

But she doesn’t want what I have to offer. She made that clear.

She continues to stare at me, not saying anything.

I raise a brow. “Look, if you don’t have anything to say, you can leave. I’ve got work to do.”

“I love you, Jake. And I’m sorry for hurting you.”

I narrow my eyes, taking in the nerves I see in her face. It reminds me of the shy, awkward girl who talked to me like a person and not like the big man on campus other girls wanted to be seen with.

I stay quiet.

She wets her lips. “I miss you and I don’t want to live without you. I want to let you in.”

She’s saying all the right things and I want to believe her. But she hurt me, making me a miserable bastard. “You want to, but will you? I told you I loved you, Lia. And you shut me down. A man can only take so much.”

Her eyes are bright with unshed tears, and she bites her lower lip. “I know. I don’t want my heart to be broken by you again, but I realize that being without you breaks my heart anyway.”

She moves closer, and that light perfume that’s so her assaults my senses, dinging my armor.

“I would rather take that chance and be with you than without you.” She draws a finger up my forearm, her touch soft and tentative. “I thought I was over you all those years ago, but my life always felt incomplete. I know it was because you weren’t in it.”

She rolls up on her toes and kisses me softly. “Jake, I need you.”

I ball up my hands, trying not to touch her just yet. Once I do, all talking will be over, and I have a feeling she has more to say.

“I quit my job and put my condo in Seattle on the market.”

I rear my head back, eyes wide. My chest tightens, hoping she isn’t fucking with me. “You did?”

“I did.”

“I thought Seattle was your home now.”

She shakes her head and twines her arms around my neck. “You’re my home, Jake.”

Love whips through my body, warming me from the inside out. We may have a chance after all.

My hands fall to her hips. “Well, this changes things a bit. You’re now homeless and unemployed. What do you plan to bring to this relationship?”

“Me. All of me.”

My heart expands in my chest, and I pull her against me, crushing my mouth to hers. Her tongue slides against mine with just the right amount of pressure and suction. I press my erection against her and she moans softly in her throat.

Our kisses turn frantic and we tear at each other’s clothes. Our shirts get tossed away and I unbutton her jeans, pulling them and her panties down her legs at the same time. She returns the favor and my cock springs free, eager to get to its destination.

Lia lies back on the hood, and I stroke myself as a thought hits me. “Shit. Condom.”

“I’m on the pill.”

I tilt my head in question and she nods. “Please, I want to feel all of you. Every vein, every ridge.”
