“Kitten I have to-”

Shadow yowled and wanted to be put down on the floor. Jared hastily wrestled him into his little wheelchair so he could scoot away.

Ring, ring.

Phantom thought he could hold the baby.

“I can’t get him to stop crying.”

Lyle piped up. “He’s a baby. That’s what babies do, they cry,” he said dryly.

Colt turned on him and hauled him up by the front of his shirt.

“Lyle!” he shouted. A real roar. “If I hear you ever utter something so fucking unhelpful ever again-”

Ring ring.

“-you’re out! Do you hear me?” Colt shook him and roughly let him go with a flick of his fingers.

Phantom thought people in the next state could have heard him. The power of a voice.

“Yes,” Lyle muttered.

“Yes fucking what?” Colt roared.

“Yes Prez,” Lyle snarled.

Ring ring.

Phantom could hold the baby.

Colt turned back to April. “Kitten, I will take him after, I have to take this call-”

“Noo…” April howled.

Colt lunged for his phone.

“Fuck.” He looked at the screen. He’d missed the call.

They all looked at each other. April gulped. The baby quietened for a moment.

The phone rang again. Ring ring.

“April,” Colt said quietly, looking at her directly in the eye. “I have to take this call, we’ll get a nanny or some help-”

“Wait, please, please-”

Ring ring.

Phantom could hold the baby. He knew he could. He stood up. He held up his hands, and stood in front of April.

“You-” April eyed him. Everyone eyed him. Even fucking Shadow the cat looked up and straight at him. He felt them all looking on, surprised, incredulous. Disbelieving. Yeah, he had never held a baby before, yeah, he had no clue what he was doing. Yeah, they all thought he was a murdering psychopath, and yeah they were right, he was. But he could hold the fucking baby.

Ring ring.

Colt looked hard at Phantom. Phantom blinked.

April looked at Phantom.
