She sighed. Only Dev could answer that. Unfortunately, he’d been too busy to even spare a few minutes in the day with her to discuss anything of import. But soon, she’d have all the answers she needed. She’d ensure it.

A noise from behind distracted her.

“Dev, you’re back?” she exclaimed, surprised to see him back so soon. “Everything settled at the accident site?”

He pressed a hand to his neck. “Yeah. Everything is fine now. I’ve resolved it. The sad part is that the explosion was premeditated. Someone deliberately caused it. My old team searched through the debris and found casings of an explosive device.”

Her eyes widened. “Oh my God! Who would do that? Do you have enemies?”

He shrugged. “Not that I know of. The team is figuring it out. They’re looking into all the people who had access to the site. I came home to spend time with Neil and you. There was nothing more I could do there today.”

“You’ve done enough already.”

And he had. He’d cared for his staff, visited the injured in the hospital and provided them with whatever aid they needed, while working with the team to get to the bottom of the explosion, even though they weren’t his responsibility anymore. She was quite impressed by his concern for those who had once worked for him.

“I’ll text Aaryan my findings. He needs to know,” Dev said.

“Wanna go for a walk in the forest? I’ve been wanting to go see that spot?”

He tilted his head. “What spot?”

She frowned. “You don’t remember our spot?”

“We had a spot?”

Her eyes widened. How could he not remember the place where he had told her to be his for the first time? Where he had told her, he loved her for the first time? Where they had made love for the first time? Had it not been important to him?

A corner of his lips tipped up, and she tossed a cushion from the nearby chair at him. As usual, it missed its mark.

He laughed. “I love teasing you. Of course, I remember our spot in the forest. How could I ever forget that?”

She scowled.

“Where’s Neil?” he asked.

“He’s having a Netflix watch party with his school friends.”

He frowned. “A Netflix watch party? How does that work?”

“They watch a Netflix movie together even though they’re at different locations, and then they discuss it on their group chat.”

He chuckled. The sound warmed her heart. She recalled how earlier on, during their time in London, Dev would hardly laugh and now he did so easily.

“Let’s go then,” he said.

He led her to the back of the house, and they stepped outside in the sun. They began to walk in the direction of the forest.

“My uncle called, you know,” Dev said.

Avantika scowled. “What doeshewant now?”

Dev flicked her nose. “You’re cute when you’re angry.”

“Don’t deflect,” she scolded. “What did he want?”

“He’s mad at me because I told him that I brought Neil and you to Shimla, and that I’ve asked you to marry me.”

She rolled her eyes. She wasn’t talking about marriage to him. Not yet. She didn’t know what she was waiting for but she didn’t want to think of marrying him right now. The two of them were in a good space, and she didn’t wish to change that. Complete and utter happiness had eluded her for so long, and now that she was genuinely happy, she was scared to change anything. She, Dev, and Neil were a family, and marriage wouldn’t change that.
