Seeing him watching her, she swapped the subject. “I don’t like your uncle. He’s mean and cruel.”

Dev arched a brow. “Now, who’s deflecting?”

When she didn’t reply, Dev shook his head. “To be honest, he’s not that bad. I know he tried to hurt Aaryan. But in his defence, he did it for me. He cares for me. I’ve explained things to him, and I’m sure he regrets his actions.”

“He didn’t seem so regretful when we met him in London. He was awful then.”

“He didn’t know then what you mean to me, what Aaryan and Vihaan mean to me.”

“And now he does?”

“I think so. I told him last night that I wanted to clear everything with Aaryan and Vihaan. He doesn’t get it because even he doesn’t know the truth.”

She didn’t say anything. They walked in silence for a short distance until they came to a clearing beyond which was the lake.

She stopped and took a slow spin.

She took in the gurgling water—the sound of it was still soothing to her ears. Large rocks bordered the lake. She remembered this as the exact spot where they used to hide from the world. It was here that he’d made love to her for the first time under a starry sky in the light of the silvery moon on a cold winter night. God! So much time had passed since then. So much had happened since that night long ago.

Dev stood back, hands in his pockets as he watched her.

She grinned. “It’s just the same. It’s still so quiet. How has it remained so pristine and untouched? Has no one found this spot yet?”

“This place is not open to the public. I bought the land leading from my house to this spot and a bit beyond a couple of years ago. The remaining patch of forest land between our houses is owned by the government.”

She walked back to him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. “Did you come here often?”

“Initially, it reminded me too much of you, so I avoided it. But later, I started coming here whenever I wanted to hide from the world and think of you.”

She pushed to her toes. “Missed me much?”

“Do you even need to ask?”

She shook her head and pressed her lips to his. His tongue snaked inside her mouth, and all her worries vanished; the world disappeared. Only she and he existed. This, her and him, was right. It was perfect.

Dev’s hands slipped beneath her top, and he caressed the bare skin of her waist before he released her. “Let’s go home. I want to make love to you all over again.”

She giggled. “Why? Making love in the open doesn’t appeal to you anymore?”

“It definitely does, but we have no blanket.” His eyes sparkled. “Unless you want me to take you against a tree or a rock. I wouldn’t mind that at all.”

Her whole body heated. “I don’t mind, but we have a son who is known to wander around. Although I’ve told him to stay close to the house, you never know what mischief he gets into. Let’s go back, and then you can do as you wish with me.”

“I’m going to hold you to that.”

Smiling, she twined her hand with his as they returned via the same route they had taken. She spoke to him about everything and nothing in particular. She was just plain happy to have him by her side.

“Last night,” Dev began a long moment later. “When I came home, I went to Neil’s room. He was awake, and he asked me if we were married in the past.”

She let out a heavy sigh. She really had to decide on this soon, especially now that her son was also asking about it. Which was to be expected. Neil was bound to question the status of Dev and her relationship. While initially, he’d been too delighted to be united with his father, he was too clever to not ask the relevant and important questions.

She breathed out. “Yeah, I never told him much about our relationship in the past. He’s bound to be curious now that you’re living with us. So, what did you reply?”

“I told him the truth, that we weren’t married and that I plan to marry you soon. He was delighted to hear that.”

Her brows shot up. “Hey! I haven’t said yes.”

“You have thought about it, I assume.”
